roof lantern size and direction help pls.

Hi,
we are planning on a 4m single storey extension to our kitchen diner . it is a south facing garden - cant decide what size lanterns to opt for. dont want to fry in the heat but also want as much light in as possible- any advice wpuld be great - including which way they should lie ! thanks

With a bit of imagination, any lamp can be fixed there, it depends though on how bothered you are by cable/wires showing. My suggestion though will be to choose a different light fitting than the Next one. The main reason is size - 45 cm is rather tiny compared to the size of the space you have there - it will look out of proportion. Maybe if you get two?... I agree, you need to speak to your architect. 7m does not sound a lot at all if you want a traditional looking orangery however given the depth of the room, the doors and windows, in theory I doubt you need any type of roof light. My brother built a 8 x 6.5m extension for his kitchen. On the 8m wall he has 5m bifolds and a window either side. He put in 2 lanterns of 3m x 1.8-2m. He designed the extension himself and his one regret of not using an architect isn't he hadn't considered the amount of heat and light that would come through the lanterns. His floor and furniture also started to fade pretty quickly so he recently had UV window film professionally fitted which has helped a lot. His lanterns are motorised. He also has pendant lights fitted in them. He's surrounded by woodland but he has a real issue with flies etc coming through the lanterns. It may also be worth speaking to the architect about lighting if you want a large lantern/s and the fly issue if you want to open the lanterns. There are also different types of glass available with thermal qualities, built in blinds etc which your architect should know all about. Orientation of the room is also key ( his faces south btw) and whether you have large trees/buildings etc blocking light.

Hi Jonathan, Thank you, it’s certainly worth giving your design some thought, I really want the extension to be shorter, so I like the idea of widening it a bit. it’s a Victorian house and we want to keep as many original features as possible and in keeping so we won’t be removing the chimney breast or putting in bi-fold doors, but we could move the french doors to the end of the extension to look over the garden. I really wasn’t keen on a peninsular but I agree it’s a good use of space and this does get round the issue of two ceiling heights and the problems that will pose with the lighting. We can’t have a pitched roof so are definitely going with a lantern, the dining room will be staying as it is (except open plan) as we have a separate living room so we don’t need another dining space, but the extension could house the larder (housekeepers cupboard) and a sofa opposite if the extension was wider. Lots to think about, we don’t want to make a very costly mistake so thanks very much, I really appreciate you input.
