What shade of gray goes with magnolia?

Hi 👋
We have painted our house with magnolia and white trims/doors. However, there are some wood panels in the hallway and I was wondering if we could paint them a light gray that is still warm and goes with magnolia.
We were looking at something like cashmere gray but some friends said it will look horrible with magnolia. Any thoughts? Should we go for cashmere gray, another shade of gray or completely forget about gray!

Magnolia is a very generic term for a type of beige, but it can vary from company to company. Can you share a picture of the magnolia tone as well as the panelling in question, then I am sure you will get lots of comments?

As Sonia says, Magnolia is a generic term. The best way to think of colours is to imagine there are only twelve (hue families) in the world and every single thing you look at is in one of them. Greys can be blue-ish or violet-ish or greenish etc. Likewise, Magnolia can be slightly yellow-ish or pinkish. The bluer a grey the more it will clash with a yellowish magnolia. I would paint out swatches on card and trust your instinct.

I wouldn't be too concerned having brown specks in the stone top to match the floor. I would recommend to get some real Silestone samples from your kitchen company and look at them in your house against your floor. Also get some paint samples and put together a mood board. This will give you an idea of the overall look, this is what I do for my clients. It takes all the confusion and guess work out of it, when you can see samples and not just looking at the colours on the computer screen.

Grey goes with everything, I love it! In my kitchen I have white cupboards with a green grey granite top and I've just jazzed it up with one of my prints at the back of one of the counters and some old brightly coloured Fortnum and Mason tins to give it some colour. Primary colours will keep it very modern so yellow, red or blue. However the wrong grey can sometimes be quite cold and as the kitchen is the hub of most homes you want it to feel cosy, so maybe the yellow/ red side of the spectrum would counteract that. Saying that though my print is of a peacock wearing emeralds and I don't think the space looks any colder for it. I would just say keep it bright and energetic (maybe a coloured splashback or tiles, or just get some pretty ornaments/ toasters/ scales to liven it up) , if the place looks cold and uninviting cooking won't be so much fun!

Looks as though someone muddled the colour code numbers in ordering. Did you order them yourselves? If so check codes on order with the packs if you still have them. If the fitter ordered see if you can check their order. If you're sure it's someone else's error I'd kick up a hell of a stink, in a reasonably nice but very firm way, and insist they take up and relay despite all the hassle. Alternatively find an alternative colour scheme you like, as you're trying to do, and ask for a part refund for error and nuisance etc.

Cashmere changes colour throughout the day depending on the light so i would keep all units the same colour. Personally not a lover of American fridge freezers especially in smaller kitchens. They seem to draw your eye to them as they are so bulky. Depending on the brand you will need to allow ventilation around it and also space each side if you intend to have tall units.

I agree with your friends that cashmere grey would clash horribly with magnolia. I would paint the wood white the same as your doors/trims.

If you'd like to stick with the Magnolia then I'd recommend a really good quality white paint for the trim. Nothing with a gloss in it. This will help the Magnolia look fresh and more intentional. I highly recommend Mylands wood and metal paint in matt, it gives a gorgeous professional finish that is hardwearing and easy to use. I'd go with either pure white or Charterhouse White. Choosing a grey colour from the same HUE Family neigbourhood as your Magnolia would mean the colours have an organic connection.

But as mentioned above magnolia is a very generic word. Colours described as Magnolia can come from the middle of the Yellow-Red Hue Family or even into the Yellow Hue Family.

The thing with choosing greys from the Yellow-Red Hue Family is they can shift notably purple in imbalanced lighting. So I would begin a search from the Yellow Hue Family.

Cornforth White & Ammonite, Salt & Stoke are from the Yellow Hue Family too.
