A lot of people ask how easy it is to clean stainless steel [worktops]. The simple answer is 'very easy' and GEC Anderson recommend the microfibre cloths that have been mentioned by a number of contributors, in combination with cold water. Simply wipe down the worktop after use to prevent build up of streaks or marks - especially, in hard water areas. And that's it! Some words of caution probably should be taken into account before making a final decision as to whether stainless steel suits your lifestyle. Stainless steel is prone to attracting finger prints and marks and so the key here is to regularly wipe down the surface so as not to let dirt and extraneous material to build up in the first place. Another thing to consider is that stainless steel will scratch and mark over time. This is perfectly normal! Scratches and marks will build up over time, creating a unique patina appearance. Simply ignore them. Your stainless steel worktop will outlast pretty much every other alternative worktop material and should provide you with several decades of useful service.

Are you planning to do the work yourself, or are you looking to get a company in? While it's expensive to get a company to do it, they will have great ideas to help you make the most of your space. It looks like there's limited storage space so a larder is a good idea. There are some great designs available these days that allow you to store lots of stuff and still see it all so you don't have old food lurking at the back! You might want to consider putting a breakfast bar under the window? If you're on a budget just changing the cabinet doors can make a big difference, or painting them and changing the handles. Likewise just changing the worktop for something more modern can instantly update a kitchen.

Hello Laura, It's an essay but succinctly.... 'Microwaves' are high frequency radio waves, like light visible radiation are on the electromagnetic spectrum. Normal conditions of use means there is limited cause for concern with thermal burns from hot food exposure to microwaves etc. Correct usage- including materials for cooking means that microwave ovens are convenient and safe. Manufacturing standards are strict and in constant revision. Food does not become radioactive once cooked and microwaves do not stay in food after cooking nor in the appliance! However there is quite a lot of written arguments and scientific citing for why microwaves are unsafe, leaking microwaves in damaged appliances, food containers that emit harmful chemicals etc, also nutrient loss due to this method of cooking. So people make a choice.. As long as the product is fit for purpose ie the seal of the door is intact and the appliance is not damaged in any way.. then the microwave is a useful and convenient piece of kitchen equipment. I do though like to maintain a distance even with mine and it's mostly used for heating up cold coffee and making porridge! :))

Hi. Is it a period property? I would add cornicing and then paint the cornicing and ceiling a darker shade than the walls to bring the ceiling down. I think if you did this you could get away with taller cabinets otherwise I think you're in danger of accentuating the ceiling height ( sorry to disagree on this and may well be wrong!) Go for either white units or a cool colour so grey, blue or green. I'd integrate the fridge freezer and maybe carry the units over the top of a cooker hood as pictured so it looks more streamlined. I'd do away with the serving hatch and have open shelves on this ŵall, Alternatively you could have the shelves either side of the cooker hood and units on the sink side as it may feel more spacious given the door position. I don't know if it's your thing but mirrored splashbacks would make the space feel bigger and also bounce more light. I'd also do away with the draining board so you have more worktop space if you have the space for a dishwasher. Do you use the microwave regularly?
