curtains for awkward window

Hi there, I’m looking for advice on the best type of curtains for these windows. They are in my son’s bedroom. There’s no wall space above the window, so not sure where a curtain pole would go. Is it ok to have a pole on the window frame? Plus, the window goes into the corner. Not sure what best solution would be. Have a preference for curtains rather than blinds. Any helpful advice appreciated, thanks!

You could fix the pole to the outer frame or even have one ceiling hung if you put timber up there first to hang it onto.

l would have the pole extended on the left hand side and drape the curtains to the left so you get the full light in on the right hand side during the day.

Hi - my slight concern with Italian strung is that it will cover a lot of the glass on this particular window & so permanently cut out a lot of light. Also, whilst shutters would look good, I wonder if the windows will still be able to open? Personally, I'd see if the client was up for a more bespoke/creative solution here. 1) use 2 flat right-angled triangular panels, one either side, attached on sloping top edge of window. Use an eyelet or loop at the bottom right-angled corner of each, then lift them up & out wards to the ceiling, pivoted along the sloping/attached edge, to figure out where you need to put a tiny hook to fix to. Hard to describe- a bit 'sail-like' but you could vary the sag to suit. This would be v economical on material, though they would need to be double-sided & this could be in complementary fabrics. 2) use similar shaped fabric, but each side rolls up to effectively a sloping blind. You could use a roller blind mechanism along each slope, or simply have hand-rolled blinds. They will of course roll up 'unevenly' - rolling parallel with the slope means the right-angled triangle point will be last to disappear! You could perhaps play with this by having it attach to the ceiling right next to the rolled blind - ie roll blind up until just left with triangle point, then flip this up over the rolled blind & attach - it would look rather attractive (like an envelope flap or neatly wrapped present!!) In this way, you keep the light & option to open the windows, and hopefully impress your client with your creativity!

As it's for a children's room, why not do something based on old fashioned tent flaps. 2 triangles of lined fabric that slightly overlap, with small tie backs. You wouldn't need any gathering in the fabric and this would bring the cost down. You'd have to find a way of fixing the fabric at the top and on the diagonals, but I can't see that it would be terribly difficult. If you've got the space, you could even bring the curtain forward to create a play area between it and the window.

Curtain tracks can be fitted to a ceiling - my bay window goes right up to the ceiling and I have a white metal rail attached to it, however as one side of your window is no wall for the curtains to lay against so it may look a little odd. I don’t think a pole would be ideal as they are bulky and there is no room for the finial on one side. I know you want curtains, but blinds would be a better option, as you already have. You could try Roman Blinds if you want something a bit dressier?

Thanks Sonia, yes I think blinds might be better. Just want it to feel cosy. We inherited those metal blinds when we moved in. Very keen to get rid of them!

Hi @Nicki Gee, would you consider a roman blind? It can look smart and still cosy with a roman blind compared to a roller blind or venetian blind.
