Flooring Design Dilemma

Terrazzo Kitchen with Restored Wooden Floors in an Open Plan Layout

Any ideas how we can combine open plan of a terrazo tile floor (kitchen only) whilst restoring the wooden floors for the rest of an open plan home?

Just playing with the idea in hopes I can get the best of both worlds.

Terrazzo and wood, look wonderful together, they are both full of texture and interest. Ensure the join, where they meet,looks professional.

Hi, I'm not an architect or anything but we are currently extending our home so I've just gone through the same thing needing larger kitchen/diner, utility room, coat/boot/Hoover room etc cupboard. I'm not sure what all the things are in your plan but what jumps out to me is: could you access the kitchen diner where you have the green block (planned coat cupboard - next to dining room table) or at least a door along that same wall somewhere, or what about glass French doors along that whole wall to let light poor in and then where you have the current door opening which is next to the underside of the stairs I think, you could build a large floor to ceiling cupboard that would take up the same space as the door opening. That way the wall along the table just gets extended on that side and you would access the coat cupboard from the kitchen side, as if coming in or out the current door. When closed it would just look like a door to another room as all plastered and painted (like a built in wardrobe only a small one and you would have access through a door or glass French doors by the dining room table (you can get narrow ones which either side along the wall to open or open outwards into the hall. Thanks urban space - we don't have under floor heating and the wood floor we had fitted about 5/6 yrs ago has been a nightmare. We did have an expansion joint but had so much movement and warping. We had the company back out beginning of this year and we had wanted to have a new floor at that stage but they said they could put right the existing one. Not sure on the technical term for what they did but they effectively relaid/ straightened it and used a resin with wood chips in to fill the gaps so you couldn't see them but within 5/6 months we have movement again and now all this resin is starting to rise out the top. For that reason I'm just not prepared to have a proper wood floor again - it might be down to the fitters but it has been extremely costly. By the time you add our dog into the mix and the scratches he has added to it I think a fake wood effect is the way to go for us

I love the 'where do you keep your elbows' conundrum. ^^ It was great to see your layout because it was what I was thinking to try and reclaim some of the hall space. Danielle also captured the idea of switching the bathroom and the kitchen extremely well - and I really think this works too. I realise though that moving the door to the garden will involve a new set of stairs down to the garden - a big change, but perhaps minimises the changes to the internal walls as a balance. Jonathan's idea is also very creative - I had never even thought of this possible configuration. I realise as I am seeing these ideas that I'm more willing to give up some of the larger bedroom space as well, even if it off-sets the fireplace, to keep the idea of the wood burning stove as the heart of the flat. It may be that we are a small family of 3 and I'm thinking of this apartment as a family space, rather than for sharers. For sharers, maximum bedroom space is probably ideal... but for a family, at least in our case, we don't need much bedroom space. Also wondering about making the large bedroom smaller - to the edge of the fireplace to increase the bathroom. And moving the kitchen to the main living space... but not sure if this is overthinking things. And maybe Danielle above is the simplest option, even with replacing the stairs....

Hello Karen, WOW what a fantastic project and this open plan space looks incredible. I feel the positioning of the living area and dining area works well and makes complete sense from what you have said about the views etc. My concern is the kitchen as I feel the current position/layout is a bit of an obstruction and to me the space does not flow efficiently and effectively. I would switch the island around so it sits the opposite way and then you could potentially have your hob on the island which will sit in front of the tall units where your ovens and fridge will be. This way the kitchen layout will work a lot better. I have attached a quick sketch below so you can see what I mean. Also this way it will give you more room around your dining table meaning the whole space will flow a lot better. Hey Bianca, you can definitely make it work. It will help to ensure there is some colour cross over, for example, bring the timber tone from the floor to your kitchen cabinets. Or select a terrazzo colour with some warm, timber, like tones in it. That way the two areas will feel more connected. Hope this helps, good luck!

Love that blend of colours, gives me more ideas... thanks schemes&spaces.

Contemplating that the kitchen be on 1-2 steps up, though long-term not sure if we'll get sick of going up and down!
