Fireplace makeover ideas

My parents would like to makeover their fireplace. They would like to remove the rock and add a fireplace insert. They will also be replacing their carpet and furniture. Would like some ideas to share. Thank you.

A picture of the entire room would help. What style furniture are they considering? Look for pictures of rooms they like.

It would be nice to see the entire wall, but this is what I would do: get rid of the stone and the hearth. Drop the new firebox to the floor and to some built ins to either side....maybe get the TV over the fireplace (easier if the box is dropped to the floor). Something along these lines:

Theirs would be a little different of course since you don't have windows there and it's not certain how far back the firebox could be pushed, but you get the idea. Nice and bright...same color as the other trim in the going on perhaps.

I'd probably make the top piece of wood of the mantel bigger so it overhangs the sides a bit more. You'd get more surface area and it would look 'right' because it'd be proportionate, it just seems not quite big enough at the moment. I'd leave the rest of it alone, the brickwork is laid in an interesting way and has varying tones. If you don't like the brick then either remove them and install a fireplace and mantel you do like or you could build a wooden surround to fit over most of the brickwork, then there'd be less brickwork on display and easier/cheaper than removing the bricks or multiple coats of paint.

if you are on a budget - then you really need to focus you spend on key elements that will improve the build and/or add value. so work with the tiles etc. it won't look good being different and may actually devalue. but think new front door and ideally frame is a good idea - perhaps in a hard wood. also consider the window treatments eg roller blinds or voiles etc and how they will look from the reverse eg outside. this can be an easy way to smarten the front. and yes to some simple/architectural planting. the garage door could also be toned down to blend rather than be a 'feature' so you focus on entrance

I think painting the walls grey as suggested will help immensely with bringing the tiles into the scheme. The suite apart from the sink looks alright though, I would change the sink to a more modern shape and then you could include storage underneath. I had to replace a sink in my bathroom but I matched the dimensions of the original and there was no damage or repair work needed. An alternative sink could be rectangular in shape and this could cover any gaps in tiling etc. Left by your existing sink. Duravit do a good quality cheap one. I would change the window though as it is unattractive but I guess that might be a longer term job!

The hearth looks like marble so would be a shame to cover it in tiles. I like the wooden surround and it’s quite unusual. How about tiling the cream insert and painting the surround? Either white, or a colour to connect with the rooms decor. If you like 30s decor tiling in Arts &Crafts or Minton style tiles would be appropriate,

A hearth may be required (depends on local code and type of insert), but a full wall of stone is not, so they should be able to do something simpler with the space -- however, if they do, they will probably need new flooring in the room, so that's something to take into account.

I wouldn't aim for the TV over the fireplace, but a smaller surround will probably mean that the TV can move closer, making it easier to arrange furniture to enjoy both. And have art hanging over the firebox too!

Honestly, once the stone comes down, the world is your oyster, so you just need to look at some photos and get a sense of what appeals and fits with the character of the house and your parents' stylistic preferences.

I love my stone FP in my MCM home it is huge 10'x8'x4' the back of the FP forms the wall behind my stove ans some stainless cabinets that can be moved so I can clean the stone .I love wood burning FPs but they could easily do an isetrt into that FP.IMO painted stone is just plain ugly . Our FP is so large it actually is part of the hpuse construction with a huge caoncrete base in the basement . Your parents might want to check out what is possible .
