Please help-plaster crumbling off when stripping wallpaper

Hi,
Please only constructive advice only, just having abit of a redecorating stress. First home and stripping living room wallpaper today-it's a really old house and there's what looks like newer plaster bits on the wall which is just coming off when I steam the wallpaper off and other green bit of wall that doesn't have newer plaster on it. Don't know that we can afford to Replaster at this stage as quite alot to do in the house. I'm going to redecorate with wallpaper anyway so I'm going to put lining paper on but should I try and sand the plaster abit where it's broken off or do I attempt to get as much of it off as possible if it's all coming off anyway or what should I do? As a quick make do and to be very cost effective l would buy some polyfilla, put it on especially if you have some big holes, then sand it as smooth as possible.

I agree with Daisy. I watched our decorator prep our living room walls which had lots of small craters above the fireplace. He used white filler to fill the holes, left it to dry, then spent quite some time hand sanding it smooth. Lots of white dust everywhere but it looked amazing when it was done. This will be so much cheaper for you if you don’t mind a bit of graft. Here’s my lovely smooth wall!

Hi Liz, sounds like you've got an exciting project on your hands. My two penneth, for what it's worth, is that hallways are often neglected or left til the end. Some people don't think they are worthy of spending too much money on. However, I disagree. When you first walk in the door, or you move from room to room, your hallway gets oodles of views and movement throughout the day. When people visit - their first impression to your house is in your hallway, so you should start as you mean to go on. So rather than paint over the wallpaper and make do, if it was me, I would bite the bullet and take off the old wallpaper and repaint the walls. Whilst doing it, pay attention to the lighting in the hallway and make improvements to increase the light. I can't comment on what needs to be added from the pictures, but you could consider recessed lighting up the stairs, better quality pendant lights, placing mirrors opposite windows to reflect the light back in. Or why not follow Abigail Aherne's lead and embrace the dark side. Make it cosy, comfortable and a little bit quirky! There's lots to consider, but ditch the paper!! Most importantly, enjoy the process and don't think of it as a chore. It's exciting and the adventure is only just beginning.

I love Josette wallpaper. I used it on my chimney breast in my old bedroom. Loved it so much, another shade went up under the dado up the stairs and in the hall in my house too. We then moved and we have it now in our new bedroom in yet another shade! I put the paper up in my old bedroom. It’s tricky but not the worst paper I have ever hung.

Thank you. the current tiles in there are really quite big - much bigger than this size on the paper. To be honest I'm trying to do as much cosmetic improvement to the house as possible using as little money as possible so I hadn't thought of removing the bottom tiles and doing that whole wall with this paper but yes I think that would look good, much better than doing half. I imagine we could remove the current tiles ourselves but would then get someone in to re plaster that bit of wall? If so, how long is it before you can paper a newly plastered wall?

New lights arrived, chose two for size comparison, eventually went for something clear glass, and a choice of bulbs. If I have to look at it going upstairs it may as well look interesting, lol!
