Rear extension on a chalet bungalow.

Looking for inspiration and pictures on how to build a rear extension on a chalet bungalow for only half the width of the house without making it look bolted on. Many thanks.

The key things to consider to make an extension look like a natural part of the building as a whole are:

- materials, make sure they are either similar or contrasting in an interesting way in colour / texture or complimentary to the original in some way. Can take an experienced eye to get this right.

- shape, use similar shapes to the original so that it speaks the same language - think of the roof and the edge of the roof in particular

- window patterns, match the original window patterns - again make it speak the same language

Internally to make sure it doesn't feel like a bolt on you need to get the space configuration right and consider how it works with the rest of the internal space.

To Will from Christin: Hello again Will, can't figure out how to reply direct to you. I hope you get this. We had a visit from the Parish Council who talked about the colour we intended to paint the Bradstone. We listened then carried on as planned. No, the conservation didn't give us a problem. They are only concerned with keeping the village looking good but fortunately our house is in a part not owned by the estate [all Medieval] and therefore a little more free with a mix of private properties...and anyway we want our place to fit in with the village and look gorgeous. We are planning to have a designer balustrade [Straysparks] in front which is in very clear view. No problems with that. The rest is a new rubble wall by the newly created car parking and a fab limestone staircase to replace the sweeping, crumbling and silly previous one. It's always a good idea to consult and discuss before spending money and annoying anyone that might make your life difficult. Big folding doors...expensive so choose carefully! Good luck. C

When concept planning a project like this I start with tracing over the plan and marking each of the more expensive elements to move - like structural walls/columns and drainage. This helps as you start with a much clearer plan. Then consider views, sunlight, movement patterns, sizes and configurations of fixtures and fittings, etc... Draw bubbles/blocks over the top of the clear plan for the different activities you'd like to accommodate - you can also cut these out of bits of paper so you can move them about and play with them until you get a configuration that you like. Hi Jonathan, A nice big span like that will really open up the extension to the outdoor space and will look amazing. Crittall will provide the style and class, and with the wide span I would look at putting maybe three sets of double doors seperated by frames so on a nice day you can open all three sets of doors and get a real link to the outside. They'll be quick and easy to shut and you can adopt just the one double door as your frequent use door if the weather is unkind. See our website for more information on Crittall Doors and Windows and download the brochures. The example photo shows two sets of double doors in frames over a six meter span. Note: One more thing to consider is the lead time - Crittall has a lead time of 16-20 weeks, so if you do plan on installing Crittall, get the order in within plenty of time. Bifolding doors do not need to look so modern and (dare I say) a bit sterile - horizontal glazing bars can provide the contemporary look if you are after the Crittall style. The big advantage of bifolds is you can get a clear 95% width opening, so in good weather, you really are at one with the outdoors. You should either look to fit an odd number of doors all folding to one side so you can have one frequent use "traffic" door, or an even number of doors split in the middle so you can have two traffic doors in the middle that act like standard patio doors. (With big span like your plans show, I'd go for the latter.) To carry off the industrial look, you would need to get bifold doors with very fine sightlines, such as Sunflex SF55, with proper horizontal glazing bars (not superficial stick on bars). See the bifolding doors available on our website. If budget is a concern (big extension projects can quickly run away with costs) then you may wish to consider something like the "Heritage Aluminium" range, which matches the contemporary style of steel windows, but comes at an aluminium price. Perhaps not quite as prestige or exquisite as steel, but a very popular product with some good advantages.
