New Build Garden Design Help

Hi All - we have a typical new build garden in the UK although it is larger than most luckily. The end of the garden is another house gable which obviously feels quite imposing but we aren’t too overlooked.
We planted the 3 silver birches last year at the end, and to the left of these we will have a patio with pergola built in May as this area gets the last of the evening sun.
I then need to work on the planting. I want the back right corner to be a really lush bed that wraps and shelters the new patio but when you have such a blank canvas it’s hard to know where to start. I keep considering planting some Eleagnus ebbingei either almost as a hedge all along the back fence or pleached trees to start layering up the vegetation but not sure if this would take over pretty quickly as I know they can grow fast. As worried about trashing the fence.

Hi there,

Pleached trees are a great way to add high up screening without taking too much space and so living space for a good underplanting for pops of colour and year around inteterest. When choosing the underplanting though, you should be aware that the trees tend to suck up a lot of water from the soil and so the conditions in the bed will tend to be on the dry side (potentially shady as well depending on the bed depth - cant really tell because of the snow in the picture), so you should choose the planting accordingly.

Pleached trees in part might look odd, as they're best placed to reinforce a formal layout such as a path or a full length of a boundary. I'd consider a focal tree as it only looks a small landing window. A Birch, Acer, Amelanchier, Prunus or all good small to medium garden trees that you could buy at a reasonable size to start with. The other thing, pleached trees are expensive and need correct staking/guying to keep them in place. A generous patio outside the living room doors provides immediate seating outside the house, whilst a smaller patio area in the NE corner will optimise the evening sun. This then lends itself to an asymmetrical layout but perhaps with a central lawn which the an adjoining path takes you round, The lawn could be oval on a NW - SE axis with paved areas in the NE and SW corners with generous planting to the boundaries to provide a setting to the whole garden and hide the boundaries. Hope that helps. At least you have a blank canvas!

Hi Eve, It looks like you have a very nice blank canvas to work with! The trees are far enough away from the house, and as you said, they don't cast too much shade so they shouldn't be a problem at all. I agree with what was said previously. You should observe the garden space in different times of the day and decide where is it that you would like to sit (Maybe it is the case that you would like to sit with your morning coffee in a spot, and have a barbecue at lunch time at another spot). Once you choose where the seating areas will be, you can determine the planting places. There are plants for every situation from deep shade to hot sun, so this is not a limitation, you will just have to match the right plants with the right places. The only thing with planting that you should consider is if you do want to grow vegetables. Then a place in the sun is advised. I offer a garden sketch that can be done online- a drawing not to scale that gives you an idea of how best to divide your garden to cater for your needs and tastes. This is very cost effective way to have an initial idea when you are stuck. Please do let me know if you are interested and good luck with your new garden!

You are welcome. If you don't like straight lines I once made a raised round bed/seating area with half round posts, placed 45cm in the ground. Sweet pea arches might be good….sorry not much into veg growing, but I'm sure others are… There is a calculation for wind ‘buffers’ …ie when the wind hits an object it creates an arc but you don't want trees/hedges too high to block your sun….maybe some mathematicians can advise… You have a lovely outlook i hope you have fun creating your garden
