Glass or tiled shower wall

I hate cleaning glass. Every photo of a shower has a glass divider. We are renovating our ensuite and I want to tile the whole room including inside and outside of the shower. Shower is long so we don’t need a door thank goodness. The divider would not go all the way to the ceiling and we plan to have a fan/light combination on the ceiling of the shower.

I can’t find any photos where the shower divide is tiled.

I think it would look batt but people think glass opens up the room and brings more light in.

I have a tiled walk in shower. The dividing wall goes to the ceiling, but there is a full long highlight window along external wall that gives light to the shower recess. My shower recess is only tiles to the 2000mm point as per builders specs, but I wish we had added to budget and tiled to ceiling. (For aesthetics only). The shower recess is 2000mm long by 1000mm with a ledge for shampoo etc. it works wonderfully. No glass door no glass cleaning. I have a microfibre cloth that I use to wipe down the shower recess after each shower. (My husband often forgets!). Our home is nearly eight years old. So glad I made this choice.

Also have exhaust fan and separate light on ceiling in shower space. Light is at the window end.

We have an independent bathroom company near to where we live. We spent hours looking on line at different products until we were so confused with it all. We picked a Darryl shower cabinet in the end, priced up on line and then visited the local showroom to see if they would price match - they matched the price on line and gave us a really great deal. We have a rain shower and it is fab, it's not electric, just runs off the hot and cold pipes. We got our bath from the Cast Iron bath company when they had a sale on. It's worth gathering together all the items you would like to purchase and then just asking for the cheapest price from everyone, as you can see, we got a good price but still gave the business to our local showroom. A very personal choice, and we do all the above options for our clients. Some people much prefer the look and feel of tiles, but grout discolouration & cleaning is the perennial bugbear. Wrt panels, I would urge you to do your homework, as there are some poor quality products on the market which can degrade quickly. We certainly recommend Nuance panels because of their "inert" substrate and class-leading guarantee. More expensive than other products, but in my opinion, worth the extra. Acrylic & glass also good alternatives. For an idea of price, try some of the online pricing tools available or contact Prad Glass who do some of our bespoke work - there are tools on the website to get an idea of cost, and they can be made in pretty much any finish. No, it is not too late, in fact you could not have done it before. I’d suggest taking accurate measurements to a glass supplier, they should know what deductions to make to enable them to fit accurately. If the tiles are porcelain a diamond tip drill bit will be required to affix the brackets. It will look very smart!

A friend had panels installed. Not sure of the brand. They are great in terms of cleaning. No grout means no mould. Just a squeegee to clean everything. Downside is they are plastic so can be dented and even cut by a screwdriver or drill while the accessories are being attached, but should be fine under normal use. You cannot use harsh abrasives and chemicals should be tested on a spare piece of panel before using on the shower.

This size of the tiles will determine less or more grout. 600mm square wall tiles would be excellent.

Can you post a floorplan?

I believe any electricals in the ceiling within the shower space need to be wet area rated, so that might limit your choice of fan/light.

I've seen some great photos of showers with skylights, would that be something you'd like to do?

You could compromise and have half solid tiled wall and half glass.

I understand your concern about the maintenance of a glass divider in your shower. If you want to create a fully tiled shower, it can definitely work, especially if your space is large enough. However, if you're worried about the shower feeling too enclosed, a frameless glass divider could be a great alternative. Frameless glass is a popular choice for modern bathrooms as it creates an open and airy look while still providing a barrier to contain water. On top of that, frameless glass is generally easier to clean than framed glass, as it doesn't have any metal framing or crevices where dirt and grime can accumulate.
