Quick Fix Courtyard Garden

Hello, we have a very small courtyard garden (3 x 4 metres) which is accessed via one of the bedrooms. The current decking is rotton and I would like to find a temporary fix for it (as we are busy doingbwork elsewhere in the house at the moment), so that we can use the courtyard during this summer. any ideas would be gratefully received.

Cheapest option is still decking. It will only last a few years but should tide you over. Or you could just replace the rotten bits?

Wow! Massive project but will also look amazing. I'm confused by the two levels with the concrete wall down the middle - would this come out? Or is it necessary? I would ruthlessly strip out all plants there currently with one exception -the tree with the white blossom - that could be something quite lovely and it is always nice in a garden to have one old tree (if it's a nice one) Big question, are you going to level the garden? (Rather a costly question....!) If so, then you'd best do it now! And get rid of that wall down the middle too. Next, I'd plant a quick growing hedge across the back fence and along the fence by the glass houses - try this website - https://www.hedgesdirect.co.uk/acatalog/griselinia_littoralis.html. This particular hedge is what I'm thinking of. I'd also get some good hardy evergreen creepers for the long fence to green that up. - Ivy is cheap and easy to grow. Another that grows well is honeysuckle and smells beautiful when flowering. Now time to make borders, mowing strips and plant grass or weed and feed any that you have left and then decide what other plants you want in your garden. That is almost another chapter with such a big garden..... Hope this is some help?

You need to present it as a stylish outdoor room. Paint the slatted fence/screen black. I know this might seem counter-intuitive in such a small dark space, but it gives and chic look to gardens and doesn't make the space seem smaller as you might think. Then get some planters and fix high on the back wall - you can get some really nice GRP, lightweight ones from Livingreen Design and plant with trailing ivy. This will draw the eye upwards and give the illusion of greater space as well as adding extra texture and interest to the walls. I would also be tempted to paint the back wall a pastel colour, maybe blue? This will give interest and definition to the space as well as making it look fresher. You can also use some floor level planters for shrubs that like shade. Try Aucuba japonica crotonifolia, Prunus lusitanicus, Ilex 'Golden King', Daphne odora aureomarginata, Sarcococca, Viburnum bodnantense. Also, Box topiary (balls, spirals, cones) will tolerate shade and will give a chic outdoor room feeling to the space. Buy or hire some outdoor furniture - a small dining table and some chairs and an outdoor sofa and low table. Use bright cushions and accessories and dress the space as you would the interior of your house. This will give people the idea that the garden is a useable, extra space, not a dank storage area. The garden should add value to the house if presented correctly.

Hi I know not many have fake grass but it's becoming a really good option. Aesthetically it looks like grass but you don't have to worry about muddy patches, shady areas or cutting it. It does of course require some maintenance and needs to be laid on a good base. I actually wouldn't be so quick to level the garden out, having a step up makes the eye go upwards towards the sky. The area in front of the windows could be paved, gravelled or lay decking squares across it. The boundary walls are lovely and could easily have some climbers on them, using tensioned wires, helping to highlight this feature yet provide more green without making deep planting beds. The tree at the back is possibly a bay tree and might be worth keeping as it gives something of height and structure as long as it's in good condition. Mature trees can be costly so worth keeping it possible. Hope that helps!

Start with your budget, what is it? Make a plan, gardening is not an overnight transformation, it takes time but that for many of us is the sheer joy of it. A year of all around plant interest is possible in time. I would spend my budget on getting the basics in place, so decide what you want e.g. do you want a patio and large beds and no grass, or some grass? If your local college has an agricultural course running they might be willing to help you as the students would learn a lot here, maybe ask? What is your soil type e.g. is it heavy clay or sandy? Is it acidic, alkaline or neutral, these facts are deciding factors on whether or not plants will thrive. Look at what plants are thriving in your local area that is a good guide to your soil, e.g. if there are lots of rhododendrons thriving near by then the soil will be acidic. If it were me, I would get it all dug up, lay a patio, add large beds (put in lots of fine bark compost), and no grass, just gravel. Work with your site, right plant right place is a mantra for a very good reason (!), there is no point planting sun loving plants if you get little sun so do your research on plants that thrive in shade, one good website is Plantsforshade. I would add lots of trellis to grow climbers as they will give you height and trick the eye into making your garden appear bigger, climbing hydrangeas, star jasmine ( for scent) some roses but choose carefully. Now draw up a year's plan so you can start planting for all year round colour, take your time and it's not daunting. Add attractive tubs (often on sale on our local Facebook!) and and plant appropriate annuals, there is loads of advice on line. Best of luck.
