what goes with magnolia

last year

looking for a cool splashback, one piece e.g acrylic, not tiles so that its easy for me to clean. something that goes with black composite worktop and magnolia cupboard. i'm finding it looks boring and i want to add some personality.

I would see what is available in an acrylic splashback first. There may not be a huge colour choice.

@colourhappy I totally agree. Like everyone else I can’t help being influenced by trends but I really try to choose things that are not too ‘of the moment’. Like those enormous wall clocks someone else mentioned. They look fab but they are definitely a trend that will define this period. Eventually there will be a lot of them in landfill. Our trusty magnolia paint saw us through 10 years of family life in our old house with 3 young children. It was super easy to slap a bit more on if it ever got dirty - who am I kidding, I mean WHEN it got dirty. It didn’t clash with the wood effect floors which I think many of the currently popular grey or yellow colours would have. I suppose I’m also lucky that I’ve not spent much time as a renter so I don’t have the frustration of having magnolia forced on me. I don’t remember it being a thing in the 80s either. I DO remember the Dulux ‘hints’ range from then though: Apple white, orchid white etc. My Mum loved those.

I also like your terracotta floor tiles and think you could get a great mediterranean country vibe going, which would suit the pattern on your doors. Painting your cabinets blue against a while backdrop would change the look for you. You can add warmth by putting your spices and sauces into baskets on the open shelves (might also make it easier to find the right one!) and having wooden elements like a chopping board on display. I've added a photo for inspiration. Some pictures on the wall at the end beside the door would add life.

Choosing a grey colour from the same HUE Family neigbourhood as your Magnolia would mean the colours have an organic connection. But as mentioned above magnolia is a very generic word. Colours described as Magnolia can come from the middle of the Yellow-Red Hue Family or even into the Yellow Hue Family. The thing with choosing greys from the Yellow-Red Hue Family is they can shift notably purple in imbalanced lighting. So I would begin a search from the Yellow Hue Family. Cornforth White & Ammonite, Salt & Stoke are from the Yellow Hue Family too.
