I think you can make it work better together by cladding the outside in wood. You can either do the entire cottage, or just the parts you mention. BUT... when you do, make sure that there is at least 8inches/20/cms showing clear. Paint this a colour that tones with the existing. So it looks from the image as though you have natural stone, grey and bronze colours present. You could paint the wood a deep toing ivory [without yellow tones] or a deep grey or bronze. I would go for a deep grey to act as a reccessive element to your design. Make sure the vertical edge timbers are chunky, not discrete. Don't attempt to hide the join, made the timber edge broad and chunky so you have an honest clear blend of two mediums. This cottage can and will be made to look amazing. YOu have all the elements there... Don't forget, no cottage/home does better than having some very green plants climbing up some solid thick trellis. I recommend Boston ivy or hydrangea petiolaris the white climbing hydrangea. Good luck and would love to hear from you what you decide and how it goes! x

If you are thinking of putting heavy stuff on the shelves and the back of the wardrobe is not solid wood, then yes you need to go in to the wall behind, which I understand is a stud wall. If you can't find a stud at the right height, and you go straight in to plasterboard, then you need plasterboard rawplugs. It won't be easy, because you'll need to drill through the back of the wardrobe, mark the wall behind. Pull the wardrobe away from the wall and screw in the plasterboard rawplug plasterboard rawplugs ( don't over tighten them ). You would then push the wardrobe back and try and line up the holes again. It's not the best method in the world to be fair. Can you not put wooden blocks attached to the sides of the wardrobes which will be thicker and then rest the shelves on top of those??

So you're looking at 760mm above the width of hob burners unless the hob manufacturers instructions state otherwise, for any inflammable surfaces ie wall units, decors, pelmet, integrated extractor doors, splashbacks, upstands etc. Then the wall units, decor panels and pelmet either side of the hob up to 50mm away from the width of the hob shoudn't be lower then 460mm, which is the bit i think you're worried about.
