Extension and/or loft conversion

Looking to buy a semi detached bungalow. It's on a big plot of land so has the potential to be extended at the rear and side. I'd also love to convert the loft into a master bedroom with ensuite, but not sure if this will be possible. Only at the house viewing stage so don't want to offer to buy if my ideas aren't feasible.

@jonathandb1972 thanks for the suggestions - I'm currently playing around with different options for the main bathroom and yes the attic definitely needs a bathroom added in. The windows in the main room are small windows at the top of the wall to try to get some additional light in but will still allow space for furniture. @kitchenpod - definitely worth considering a bigger utility linked to the garage. We've got to explore whether there is asbestos in the ceiling of the utility or not. The benefit of the utility as it is is it gives us space to let our dogs out without the full run of the main garden but I think it's definitely worth exploring this in more detail. I've been playing with the layout in the ensuite/walk in wardrobe in the master bedroom too.

Is there any precedent set in the immediate area for a loft conversion I feel that converting the loft of a semi-detached bungalow just won't look right.

As the neighbours have extended at the back, that shouldn’t be a problem for you. You may be able to put a dormer on the back as part of a loft conversion but I can’t imagine a side extension or any sign of loft conversion showing at the front would be permitted.

I would advice to to council website, choose planning, enter street name or postcode. You will be able to check which planning has been granted or declined.

Next door but one isn't a semi-detached bungalow, it's a detached house with a higher roof

That makes a loft conversion more possible but that’s on a detached property. On a semi-detached it would look unbalanced. Plus the pitch of the roof makes me wonder whether that was built as a chalet bungalow rather than having a loft conversion later. Always best to check with the planning department in the area - some seem more strict than others!

Hi Emma!

If there is enough head room then there should be no problem adding a dormer and converting the loft.
