how to get greek style plaster walls

I love the plastered walls you see in Greece and other Mediterranean places - the plaster isn’t totally smooth and has curves. I have a tatty brick wall outside and would love that to cover it up - how is it achieved and is DIY possible?

The wall has juat been rendered with a curved edge finish. It should be pretty simple to replicate - it can be done as a DIY task, but it is probably an advanced levele to achieve a flat wall and best carried out by a plasterer able to work with a sand cement render..

I have to agree with Daisy - reskim, or you'll never be happy no matter what you do over the top! Good plasterers are not always easy to find (and tend to get booked well in advance), but I'd strongly recommend only using people who are recommended (too many cowboys out there who thing plastering is easy - it's not, it is a real skill and art!). Also, make sure you get a fixed quote and negotiate hard! I see you're profile says you're around Cardiff - if we can help recommend someone, feel free to get in touch. Steve, I would line the walls after rigourous preparation work. One thing you could do is cross line the walls. Basically this is to make good the walls with easi-fill (with the woodchip paper off), rub down and size the walls with a thinned out coat of paste. Let the size dry fully and hang lining paper either vertically or horizontally. Once hung and dried, look at the condition of the walls re-fill the bad areas again and rub down. Just size the filled areas only and then re-line the walls in the crossed direction of the first hang. So if you hung vertically on the first, hang horizontally on the second hang and vice versa. Once complete paint as normal. You should see a marked difference in the smoothness of the walls,

Yes, the brush marks don't appear visible and the finish of the plaster itself (including directional marks etc) remain visible. A word of caution though I have also used Polyvine over painted walls (flat matt paint and flat matt polyvine) and on the painted surface I do see more brush marks. It's not terrible but (to my eye at least) you can see the application marks. I used the polyvine to add extra protection on the wall going up the stairs which is always subject to scuffs and knocks. At first I just took the Polyvine half way up the wall but it was very obvious where it stopped. I ended up just doing the whole wall with the Polyvine nd that looks a lot better and you don't particularly notice a difference between the trated wall and the other untreated ones. evident where it stopped and t

If you want it quite visually calming then I would perhaps consider focusing on materials that are natural and keeping the colour palette 'quiet'. I would be tempted to paint the wall behind the TV a very deep earthy colour such as olive and hang a large oversized wicker pendant that could look beautiful againt the wall colour to distract from the TV. A TV on white wall creates such a strong contrast that all of the effort into putting subtle texture in the room would get lost. Personally I would buy a really beautiful sideboard and put it against a deep wall and style it. I would keep the other walls a soft neutral (warm but not too yellow) and hang a slubby linen blind on the slim window and natural curtains on the other large one. Tikamoon and Zara both sell lovely earthy products and their images are really beautifully styled. If you look on the Tikamoon images they often have earthy finishes, off white walls and maybe just one slab of deep colour. Ochres, cognacs, olives etc, not saturated colours. Hope this helps.
