How do you get from the patio area to the lawn?

Do you have to climb over the grass, I can't figure out where the path to the building at the rear of the garden is.

Hi Hummy,

Yes, you walk through the grasses, they are very soft so your feet/legs brush through them. The building you are looking at is the house, the image is shot from the end of the garden, there is no path, you just walk over the grass. This client didn't want a path through their garden so we didn't include one.

Hi Jean, Love your mock up and to be honest most people struggle to visualise so you definitely aren't alone. To answer your questions: Do I 1. go different lights each area because ceiling and wise they are different areas. 2. Match the kitchen and dining areas, 3. match all three Personally I would ensure that all three are consistent in style. For example if this is going to be a modern living space, then I would stick with modern lighting (you can break the rules with one show-off pendant, perhaps over the dining table, but it would be a feature). Over the bar, due to the hob area, it isn't very practical to have pendants. You could have a surface mounted piece to make use of the fitting you have, but in this case I would consider lowering the ceiling throughout the kitchen to add downlights and use the hood as a source of lighting too. If that option is just too expensive (I totally understand) and you have to use what you have got, then a long or double strip of track lights which you can angle in directions for cooking would be my choice. It will also give you the output and practical lighting you are looking for. Another take but less expensive would be to just lower the ceiling above the bar (around the beam - extending either side). If you did lower the ceiling to add downlights I would extend it past the beam, just enough to fit a row in for the bar, this side of the beam. Many people are afraid of lowering the ceiling as they feel it will make the space "darker". In this case I feel like you read the height lower anyway, due to the location of the beam. Having a clean / neat / functional lighting solution would be my priority / preference here. That means you are pretty free to do what you want around the rest of the areas too and the change in ceiling height will add to a more theatrical wow when walking into the dining space from the kitchen, especially if you hang one or two focal pendants above the dining table. When it comes to the seating / living area around the corner, make use of floor standing lamps (in the same style, ie, country, modern, traditional as the other areas). They don't have to be the same colour, each space can have its own mood, but I would consider whether in each case you want to make the lighting a "feature" or not. So blend it in if you don't want it to stand out, and contrasting colour or shape for "look at me". I hope that helped you Jean, good luck and definitely let us know what you came up with in the end! Advice regarding garden layout for paths, patio/decking area

Had some thoughts about your garden and came up with a rough sketch:) (see pic). Decking outside the garden office would look nice but I’m not sure about bringing it all the way to the house as decking can take a fair amount of maintenance although you can get composite decking or slabs that look like wood which would probably be easier to look after. I think breaking it up and having some planting would be nice and more pleasing to look at. So on the sketch I brought the decking to surround the office windows then added a small seating area and space for planting which could include a small pond or water feature. This could be like a contemplation area where you can relax and have a tea break:) Instead of decking pathway I think slabs or tiles to match the patio would be better. The patio I’ve kept as is but extended a little to include bbq area. Did think that putting the bbq on the right side of patio might be good as well. Put in some extra planting areas but that’s just because I like plants:) planting pocket is basically a hole in the deck but some tall grasses or similar with lighting would look great on the left side of the office and help to balance things out. Not sure on a pergola mainly because I think adding another tall structure on the left would make that side of the garden seem overly busy but it’s entirely up to you what you want. Hi there, Have you thought about removing the wall and replacing with a wire and wood rail? The drop looks more than 600mm so you do need a safety rail. This would remove some of the blockiness and reduce the heaviness of the area. You could then use an armchair style of seting here and have a different sitting area in the garden. Baseline planting would also help - raised beds or large pots at the base would reduce the impact of the wall - see one of my terraced gardens here to see different ways of reducing the impact through painting and planting: https://www.elizagraygardens.co.uk/sloping-bath-garden
