Isn’t there a height limit for fencing off garden boundaries?

Architects seem to be putting up extremely tall privacy fencing ON TOP of already tall garden boundary walls. If I want to do this, what do I do without breaking building regulations and causing a lot of neighnour dispuites? Are there specific height regulations and if so, how do I get round them, please?

Six foot is supposed to be the standard height but speak to your local planning officer regarding going higher.

For a back garden you can go up to 2 metres. Anything over that needs planning permission.

Hi Rrporsche, What did you end up going with? We actually had EXACTLY the same problem with neighbours which led me to design and make my own screening products.. Basically they are design let privacy screens which still allow light through, but give more privacy than a standard trellis type thing. Here's an example or you can see more on our website

While white fencing isn't for me in a back garden, I have seen loads of pics here on Houzz with white fences and, although they mostly seem to be over in the USA (let's face it - they tend to have better daylight in parts of North America than we do in the UK) I do like the look of it, though. I especially like the whitewash appearance if you're going for a Cottage Garden as it adds a weathered appeal. I went for black in my garden which looks pretty stylish, especially with the greens and whites in front of it. I used to live in a house with a roof terrace and we were advised at the time to not use white on the inside of the parapet walls as it would glare too much. The chosen option for the wall was pale grey (before it was fashionable) and it worked really well. For this reason, I wouldn't have gone for white fence or white furniture.

Do not despair, there is a lot you can do to make your garden more secluded with new fencing and clever planting. Is this your only garden? Can I ask whether there is any covenant preventing you from having a taller fence? If not, then can I suggest a 5’ solid fence all round, with a gate. Most dogs will easily jump over your current fence and I’m sure you want to keep your dog safe. If a solid fence is not allowed, then a tall picket fence will do the job, or add taller panels to your current fence as in the second pic. I think a pergola in one corner will give you some more privacy, and you can plant climbers on it for even more privacy (first pic). You can buy them as a flat pack or get a carpenter to make and build one for you. You can add comfy seating, and a doggy bed, under it so you can enjoy your garden on warm days. Now for the planting. I think tall shrubs will create a secret garden effect which will drown out traffic noise and visitor noise! Things like evergreens Viburnum tinus, Ceanothus, Photinia and Choisya ternata Sundance. They can be the bones of your garden. Then add shrubs that are deciduous but add colour in the spring and summer, things like Shrub Roses, Hibiscus, dwarf Lilac, Cotinus and Climbers like Clematis, Star Jasmine, Honeysuckle and climbing roses. These need a wall or trellis or an obelisk to climb up. I can see you have some planting already which is great. The final addition to the planting is perennial flowers and bulbs, but the planting above will create a cosy garden, if you don’t want more planting. The thing with a curved path is, everyone will walk in a straight line, unless the path curves around things that you can't walk through ;-) I'm not quite sure why the angle of the garden bothers you so much. It is what it is and it makes the garden more interesting. I like all your designs, but the one with the path on the left side appeals to me the most. If the path isn't 'solid', it'll be part of the lawn, so I wouldn't be too worried that it reduces the size of that.

Usually up to 2m back and 1m front garden is permitted development and above those should require planning app, which is worth doing for you and your neighbours sake for example when say you have a slope and do a seating area on a high point.

As others have said, planning permission is needed to go higher than 2m, or 1m next to a highway.
