Extension diner/ lounge layout help

We have recently moved to a house which has a large back room with kitchen, snug area and then also an extension area. Struggling with ideas for this part of the room - we already have a tv/ comfy sofa set up as a snug area so wouldn’t want to add a tv but not sure how to fill the space without pointless furniture.

Hi, I would change sofa's placement to the green wall. The sofa won't block the access from the door and natural path through the lounge this way. Now you could use a corner sofa. You could place a side board on stair's side. Maybe could add a Pladur wall on that side too so yiu'll gain an extra 'wall'. Norikei www.norikei.com

So I just went outside to actually measure the full width of the house, the estate agent plans from when we bought said it's 5m wide so I was quite surprised to find its actually 5.65m and we can extend a further 50cm out so a total external width of 6.15m. Even subtracting the wall thicknesses there's more room to play with than I had originally realised! Have been fiddling with the plan. If I were to lose the raised oven and possibly the pantry the design does look more open and means I could have some open shelving too. Its just whether that ends up being form over function in terms of how I use a kitchen. Hmm decisions decisions! Thanks again for all the help though - much appreciated!

Hi Sandi You have a great space to work with, and a lot of ideas for the space itself which is a great start. Ideally it would be best to sit down with a Designer and really dig into what you want from the space, taking time to really figure out how you want the space to feel as a whole. However, to get you started it's easy enough to create a concept design plan of the space from plans you have of the home, so if you'd be interested I'd be happy to take a look at the plan for both the basement and lounge, and send you something over to give an idea of how the design could look / be laid out, based upon the information you've posted above. Thanks again Tani, it's actually the dining room that is the conservatory. It was another 10k to go further out, which we just don't have, and like Carolina we actually quite like the shape. Carolina; we had thought about that, but currently the middle room ('snug') is a playroom and we've created a utility space under the stairs opposite the cloakroom. The front room is the grown up lounge and has the TV in it. We were looking to create a space that would work for when we have friends over to sit, eat, cook etc so we weren't separated. Do you like to entertain? A long table would fit in there very well and you would have a view of the garden. Is it south facing? A shelving unit either side of the radiator would add interest. Find one you like and buy two of them.

Yes, like the idea of a longer table. Would also like to have some sort of comfy seating to enjoy the sun as we are south facing

That is a really good space! A couple of interior design tips and tricks would help for planning the layout. One would be zoning, as it is 8mx5m it is big so think about what sort of tasks you might like to have space for, 1 would be dining and like you mentioned you could have some lovely accent chairs facing out into the garden. The second would be scale, don't afraid to go big on the dining table, 8 seats would fit comfortably as well as a couple of large comfy chairs as well. You can also anchor the space by using some kind of area rug. Good luck and Congrats again on your new home!

Thanks so much. Our table is quite new and I think we probably should have picked a larger one as suggested. Do you think it’s odd to have seating facing the garden? So when you walk in the room you see the backs of the chairs? I wasn’t sure if that’s a bad thing or not?

I think it’s fine to have the sofa facing the garden if that’s what you’d prefer. You could have either a low bookcase or console table behind the sofa if you didn’t want to see the back of the sofa. Flip the dining table the other way and consider using a pendant light where one of the downlights is to zone the dining area (or swag the light).

If you did go for a bookcase/console Pooky amongst others do battery operated table lamps for on top. I might just add an accent chair and small round table

Try changing it and see how the layout works with any existing bits you have
