plaster ceiling roses - to do or not to do?

I have a Georgian house which is loosing its 70's Artex ceilings to the halls at last and having some cornice put up. Firstly to add ceiling roses or not?

I will be upcycling the existing lantern lights. There are roses in other rooms.

Issue: The ground floor hall has two lights and one is on a narrow section under the stairs above. If i put a small 24.5cm rose there there will only be 12.3cm gap between cornice and rose with wide gap the other side on account of there being no cornice as open to stair edge.

If i don't put roses on the ground floor then there isn't much point putting them on the first floor really. On first floor hall there are two lights - one is above the stairs and is near the loft hatch architrave. Far enought to allow a rose but perhaps it'll look too busy?

I could leave it and see what it looks like with cornice up but I'd obviously like the roses installed at the same time if I'm having them - especially the over the stairs one!!

All opinions welcomed to end the procrastination!!

Do you have any neighbours who have the originals? My house is Victorian but the ceiling roses were taken down in the 70’s too. I checked with neighbours houses and have now replaced the ones in the downstairs reception rooms. None of the neighbours had roses in the hallway or landing - so we didn’t bother with them.

I'm not sure what you mean about the gap? Could you show us a sketch of the dimensions that you are undecided about? It depends on whether it would add character or if you could just chose a light fitting with a bigger ceiling attachment to compensate for no plaster rose. I would research Georgian rooms thoroughly. Glad that hideous (what were some people thinking?) artex is going.

Hi there - Definitely agree that you need a rug to tie it altogether, good thing is you have chosen an accent colour, Teal. I would suggest to add a bit of colour to your rug and some pattern to stop it from looking too same-y if you went with a beige rug. My first comment would be that whoever decided the place the Velux window there did not think about this carefully enough and if this is an architect/designer then I would seek a suitable solution from them. I also believe that Minipie's suggestion is the only practical solution available to you , i.e. the rectangular section should be angled down enough so that the line can be achieved in one piece. This will need some messing around with the plasterboard, but it is a simple fix. You will obvious need to do this with the other Velux window so that they match up. As a comment the skill of your plasterers, I would never accept a crooked line on a new ceiling... ever! Granted their solution to the velux window is not their problem, however they should have spoke to you about it and they should have seen this conflict before they started the work. Theirs has been a slapdash approach to your project. There is no excuse for not having a nice crisp line at the joint between the two ceiling sections and I would get them to rectify this. It will require a skim coat of pre-mix plaster and some sanding, however the crisp line can be achieved. Bearing in mind their sloppiness on this joint, have you checked the joints between the walls and ceiling? Again these should be crisp and completely horizontal. If this is not fixed properly then it is going to irritate you for the rest of the time that you spend in this property! Best of luck and do not allow them to compromise your project.

Personally I think you can make anything work, why not :) I've done a tin tile as a ceiling rose looks fab. Maybe go for a more modern looking ceiling rose rather than ornate one if no coving? I love when the ceiling is painted a colour, along with the ceiling rose! Good luck with your project x

Hi, You're lucky to have such high ceilings in a bathroom :) Directional spotlights could be a good option for the ceiling given the slope and if on the dimmer, will allow you to select the ambience your after. I would also suggest adding a wall mounted cabinet that fills most of the space over the vanity & toilet - it will allow you to finish the tiles at splashback height (instead of tiling the whole bathroom floor to ceiling). Pebble floor tiles seem neutral enough to combine with a few different options. You could go with a marble porcelain tile with some grey in it or a pop of colour in a smaller tile if you're after something different. you could also keep it quite neutral with a varied texture for added interest.

Your light positions sound like mine (also minus roses)

Why not try adding a circle of paper on the ceiling in the hall or painting it as you're decorating anyway. I have seen a georgian rose as small as 20cm btw

I have seen roses pretty close to the cornice, I guess it would have been a common place to try and light under the stairs and i think georgian roses were actually designed to protect the ceiling from candle or gas light so may be historically accurate??!

sorry thought i'd added the photo!!. For another room, with a ceiling rose - wonder if you know how do i hang a heavy light? Do I add a noggin between the joists or a flat board to spread weight and screw through plaster rose and into new noggin leaving the light rose visible. Or do I take the lights chain and wire throught he rose and secure chain to joist?
