question about the vent hood flu

hello,
we have a cathedral ceiling in our home and are doing a flue extension to the ceiling. we were wondering how you did yours. it looks like you just stuck the top of your flue through the drywall. did you caulk around it??? Thanks for your response! Have a great day!

I apologize for not seeing your question and replying sooner. You are probably done? When we are faced wih this situation we determine the exact angle and have the cut made by a sheet metal shop and then mount the sleeve snuggly against the ceiling. We previously tried cutting it ourselves, and/or putting a molding around the top where it intersects with the ceiling and/or caulking. I think what we do now is the most satisfactory and professional looking

I agree with Minnie that having a sight line from the front door to the best room in the house is desirable and helps with the flow. I have drawn one possible solution. I would stack the washer and dryer so that you have room at the side for ladders, the ironing board, and brooms. You could put baskets on the inside of the doors to store laundry detergent. In the kitchen I think your designer has drawn too big an island for the space because ideally you need 1000mm wall space all around. I have drawn a 2600mm island and made the room slightly bigger by getting rid of the pantry. I think there are lots of kitchen cabinet solutions to the pantry- perhaps visit a kitchen showroom for inspiration. I think the island stools will get rarely used. I would put additional cabinets or display shelves on half of the opposite side, leaving room for two stools. There are lots of great ceiling extractors. You can add a box to the ceiling to accommodate it but the newest ones are slimline enough to sit between ceiling joists. Alternatively you could have a recirculating extractor and an alternative extractor on an outside wall to satisfy building regs. It is your choice where you site the boiler- Remember it doesn’t have to go on the ground floor- perhaps you have an underused airing cupboard or room in the loft.

Hi there. Looking for some related advice. We''re also ordering a new kitchen and are trying to decide on an extractor. The only issue is that the ceiling is about 3.25-3.5m high so everyone keeps telling us to have a bulkhead over the island as a ceiling mounted extractor will be inefficient otherwise (we're told a height of more than 1.5m above the hob is the maximum; ours will be about 2.2m...). We really don't want anything hanging from the ceiling over the kitchen island as it is in an open space and will ruin the whole open plan concept. Do you know of any flush ceiling mounted extractors with motors which are strong enough to work at that height? Currently looking at Falmec, Sirius and Frecan but would love to hear your suggestions. Sorry Mat not sure if I follow. Are you having storage put in by the door? There is no storage labelled on your plans. If so, then visually speaking, the room starts from where the floor starts not from where the wall behind the cabinets starts. So if you have the same distance from both sides i.e. from right wall and from the left cabinet, it will still look symmetrical. Do you see how the room starts from the door of the cabinet and not from the splash back behind the sink? Here the column between the doors looks the same size as the wall next to the cabinets, whereas in reality the wall is at least 60cm wider. Again here the door appears to be in the centre of the room but in reality the wall on the left hand side is much wider because it carries on behind the cabinets. The designer has cleverly placed a T.V. there to stop the eye from noticing the rest of the wall. The same effect can be achieved with floor to ceiling cabinets. Was that what you were asking about or have I gone way off?

Thank you all so much. We have had months and months of conversation and research on this issue and I'm just so tired of it. Now we've paid the deposit for the kitchen and the builder is booked for the extension work to start we're feeling the pressure in terms of making decisions. You've all helped to encourage me to reconsider all options again with fresh eyes (we put the whole thing on hold for a coupld of months as we're unable to make a decision). The round chimney is my preference of the two and I prefer it to any other chimney style extractor. My overall preference would be a flush ceiling extractor but this is ultimately down to what the builder says and how this could fit alongside the beam. A venting hob is a compromise for us, which I'm sure we'd get used to very quickly as you always do once things are done. We have already designed the kitchen layout and planned where everything will go so it will take some thinking to lose the drawer/cupboard below the hob. It's exhausting going over and over the same pert of the project and never quite finding a conclusion we're happy with. But if certainly helps to have all your friendly people to talk it through with. Thanks again. Ruth
