I am a fan of painted doors -- particularly as they can be changed/repainted if you wish to change your look! And easy to touch up should something happen.. But seriously, the important factors to consider are the type of paint used and the skill of the decorator. It is important to use a good undercoat, ideally matching the colour of the undercoat to the final colour of the topcoat. It is also very important to make sure that the paint can be washed and scrubbed, which is necessary in a kitchen. My decorator swears by oil-based paints for this, however I do understand that good-quality acrylic products are constantly being developed. I have done many family kitchens with painted doors, always with great results.

Just seen this post and as a glass company would like to offer some inspiration and advice with the current staircase as it is with the open threads I would be keen to recommend a stand off fixed balustrade with or without a handrail its really your decision, see the below photo of a job we did with stand offs fixings and a matching stainless steel handrail. If you were to reconfigure the stairs there are other options such as balustrade clamps or baserail fitting as per below photos. Whilst it is commendable to be looking at architectural solutions to your problem. I feel a lot of these issues could be remedied through thoughtful garden design and a complimentary landscape scheme. Whether you are looking from the property itself or from the approach to the property, there are many ways that these views can be framed or softened by the use of specimen trees. I would be interested to see a more comprehensive plan / visual so I could advise you further.

Hi OnePlan, I love Kirsty's kitchen and I had a similar idea, I will post a piccy to let you see. I have recently downsized from a detached Victorian sandstone . I loved all the different rooms I had, huge rooms with high ceilings. This is why we are keeping the rooms kinda the same, just making them bigger in keeping with what I am used to. The only room I am adding is a utility /pantry room. This will allow me to reduce the units I have in the kitchen so I can configure it as in the picture. Having a separate formal lounge is a big bonus for me as its always ready for visitors. I also have a bit of a crafter / sewing hobby, when the time allows! So its important I can keep the mess away from the rest of the house. (Well until I can persuade my other half to build me a room in the garden!!) Any thoughts on the benefits of having the extension built all on ground level? Would it be a lot more expensive? I just thought if there was foundations being dug out anyway and the equipment was already on site, it would make sense?

That was hand finished with a custom stain. It's likely Brazilian Mahogany door with Sikkens Mahogany or Sikkens Mahogany and Oak blend.
