The design objective for the deFUSE light was to create a lighting piece that suffuses large areas with a combination of diffused and directional light. The polyurethane -coated and CNC-milled dense foam piece is lit with linear LEOs spread across its top face. It also has 11 spot LEDs where its branches terminate. The design evolved from creating a polygonal division pattern on a rectangular region. The borders of the divisions provide the skeleton of a porous volume that will diffuse the light. While the branches are distributing the light on a planar surface, the differentiated sizes of voids add a subtle dynamism to the effect due to the changing levels of light intensity. DeFuse will have a presence in any room, yet the slim design makes it suitable for spaces where views should not be interrupted across a room either through being mounted on a wall or ceiling.
