Patterns are an intrinsic part in both the natural and the man made world, from phyllotaxis, the arrangement of leaves on a plant stem to the urban patterns in our cities. The arrangement of geometrical shapes has always played a very important part in Islamic art, often dictating the architectural styles of a region. Traditionally pattern making in architecture was often labour intensive, time consuming and required exorbitant funds, however the influx of CAD/CAM technologies available today has made the entire process less laborious. An initial Tetrakis square grid was set up, which was further tessellated and subsequently relaxed at certain points, rendering the pattern to be recognisable, but attain the ability when viewed locally , to appear unpredictable. HI-MACS® an advanced solid surface material was used to translate the geometry in several options for a facade treatment. The properties of the material such as translucency, thermoplastic mould-ability allowed several interesting options to arise.
