7 Timber Cladding Ideas for Your Extension
Considering a wood exterior for your extension? Be inspired by these striking properties
Choosing what to clad a new extension in can be a tricky decision – do you stick with a brick or plaster finish to match your existing house, or branch out with something completely different? If you’re considering timber cladding, here are a few beautiful examples to inspire you.
Work a rustic mood
Timber is such a versatile material; it can look urban-crisp or softly rustic depending on the colour, size and finish of the boards. Here, softly weathered horizontal timber slats give a woodland cabin feel to this neat little extension.
If you want to embrace a modern take on country style, this is a lovely option and one that will only get better with age, as the wood softens and silvers.

Extend the cladding out
This dark extension makes a total visual contrast to the original, pale brick building behind, marking it out as a new and distinct space. However, a couple of design tricks ensure it still feels connected to the house and garden.
Firstly, the window frames and the flooring directly outside the extension are white, which visually links them with the windows on the original building.
Secondly, the black timber cladding of the extension has been extended out into the garden by way of a black boundary fence and raised decking. As such, the building feels anchored, both to the garden beyond and the original home behind.

Blend timber with brick
This extension feels crisp and contemporary thanks to the thin, horizontal cladding.
However, by keeping the colour of the wood tonally quite close to the original brickwork, the addition doesn’t make too much of a loud statement. It feels quietly connected to the original building, while also being different enough to mark it out as a new space.

Dabble on the dark side
This black-timber-clad extension makes a strong statement, but one that’s tempered by the fact that the windows in the existing brick house have also been painted black, along with the guttering and the decking outside.
As such, the addition feels like a natural extension of the house rather than a dramatic departure from a traditional-style building.

Choose a skinny fit
The whip-thin timber boards with a shadow gap in between create a crisp and clean finish on this neat little contemporary extension. If you’re a fan of clean lines and fuss-free finishes, this could be the look for you.
Again, the homeowners here have mirrored the style of the timber cladding with their choice of fence, linking the outside space to the building itself.

Go half and half
Combining timber with another material, as shown here, makes for a interesting visual effect, especially if you mix up ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ materials.
Here, the homeowners have combined the warmth of wood with the crisp finish of dark-painted render for a modern-rustic finish that brings to mind a (very chic) log cabin.

The timber cladding on this extension is in total contrast to the crisp white plaster of the original building, but it actually ties in beautifully, as the warm-coloured wood is visually similar in tone to the roof tiles.
Referencing an element of the original structure in this way allows a dramatically different-style extension to still feel like part of the same scheme.
