…the room had a built-in cupboard that was impractically deep and not wide enough.
The solution? The designers increased the depth slightly and split the recess in half to evenly distribute it between two adjacent bedrooms. They took the cupboards right along the wall to turn each one into a space wide enough for plenty of clothes storage.

Lesson 2: How to create a cosy feel
The designer of this snug sleepspace added two elements that upped its cosy credentials. First, she suggested teaming the oatmeal linen bed and headboard with a dark blue feature wall. Her clients were nervous about using such a dark colour at first, but they now love the cocooning feel of the deep tone.
The designer also added some warmth to the windows with cost-effective thick curtains. Rather than splashing out on made-to-measure ones, she bought three pairs of Ikea cotton drapes and had them sewn together to make them feel full and luxurious.

The owners didn’t want to blow the budget on new closets, so they had the existing ones sanded down and painted with emulsion. The designer also added some beading for a look that’s in keeping with the rest of the house.
Lesson 4: How to get the furniture you want on a budget
Seen some expensive furniture you love, but can’t afford the investment? Do what this designer did for her clients and hunt online for an alternative.
The owners had seen a very similar dressing table and stool in a shop, so the designer took to eBay and found these at a fraction of the cost. It might take time to find treasures online, but it’ll be well worth the effort when you find exactly what you’re looking for.

Lesson 5: How to make the most of surprises
In the centre of these two wardrobes there used to be a chimney breast. The designers started drilling the wall to see if they could find an old fireplace, but in fact, there was just a void behind the wall. The team made the most of it by knocking it down and using it as a handy recess for a chest of drawers – an inspiring example of lateral thinking.

Lesson 6: How to make your bed look like new
This sleek bed appears to be new and on-trend, but the owners didn’t have to splurge to achieve the look. Instead, the designer persuaded her clients to paint their existing bed black. It completely transformed the piece, and saved them money to boot.

Lesson 7: How to take your bedside lighting up a notch
In this snazzy bedroom, the designers have been clever with the lighting. Not only do the owners benefit from two stunning table lamps either side of the bed, they also have some more targeted illumination for late-night reading. Two wall-hung, integrated reading lamps fit neatly on either side to provide a little brightness that doesn’t light up the whole room.

Lesson 8: How to hide your storage
There’s plenty of storage in this room – a whole wall of it, in fact. Such a large bank of cupboards like this could have overwhelmed the space, but here it doesn’t. The designer achieved this by painting the wardrobes in the same colour as the walls, which helps them to blend in with the rest of the room – so you really don’t notice just how much storage there is.

A streamlined bedroom like this can only be achieved if you have a place to stash your clutter. But the storage in the room wasn’t up to scratch before the designers arrived. Take a look at the ‘before’ floorplan…
