The overall goal of the project was to create a space that was open, welcoming and truly livable, while still managing to take the users' breath away with a uniquely beautiful design. The designer, kept the traditional 50's style of the home and added modern elements such as Shark Skin glass tiles, Supreme Black textured paint on a cold-rolled steel custom hood, and a slate countertop mimicking a tide rolling in on a charcoal canvas. The cream Brookhaven by Wood-Mode Custom Cabinetry finish warmed up the otherwise cool color palette. Streamlined Sub-Zero and Thermador appliances and retro-style, chrome hardware mixed with natural stone created the modern-traditional style the clients wished to achieve. In the design stages many details were incorporated in this classic kitchen to give it dimension since the surround cabinets, counters and backsplash were white. Polished nickel plumbing, hardware and custom grilles on feature cabinets along with the island pendants add shine, while finer details such as inset doors, furniture kicks on non-working areas and lofty crown details add a layering effect in the millwork. Extending their current kitchen gave this family the open plan kitchen, dining and family space they were looking for. Beautiful in-frame cabinets in a simple Shaker style, painted in Farrow and Ball Cornforth White keep things fresh and airy. An island with casual seating and decorative display unit also hides the microwave out of sight. A solid planked oak worktop on the island picks up the oak flooring colour to add warmth to the room. The pared down layout keeps this classic kitchen beautifully on-trend. Marble-like quartz worktops keep the colour scheme pale and interesting while being extremely practical. This design began with the choice of a simple Shaker style door for the cabinets, complemented by tall but plain crown molding. Somewhat more detailed carved wooden brackets support the island countertop and glass-front wall cabinets. A warm earth-colored stain with subtle burnishing gives the cabinetry a slight appearance of age without any overt distressing or glazing. Meanwhile, engineered quartz counters, a glass-and-stone mosaic tile backsplash, and a stainless steel faucet and sink introduce contemporary materials and sleek lines. These items also add texture and color to the room: the shine of metal, the glint of glass, the gray and white of the counter, and the creams, tans and blue-grays of the backsplash. Gray painted walls and gray ceramic tile floors pick up on the colors of the countertop and backsplash. Bar stools upholstered in a striped rust-and-gold fabric and pendant lights with amber-colored shades provide a bolder pop of color. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
