We love the clean and crisp lines of this beautiful German manufactured kitchen in Hither Green. The inclusion of the peninsular island which houses the Siemens induction hob, creates much needed additional work top space and is a lovely sociable way to cook and entertain. The completely floor to ceiling cabinets, not only look stunning but maximise the storage space available. The combination of the warm oak Nebraska doors, wooden floor and yellow glass splash back compliment the matt white lacquer doors perfectly and bring a lovely warmth to this open plan kitchen space.

The Brief This Worthing client sought a stylish upgrade on their previous kitchen, swapping an old monochrome kitchen for something a little more colourful. As well as a new theme, it was also up to designer Phil to incorporate a traditional element to match the style of this property, incorporating useful storage options. This client was also looking for a full flooring improvement which would help to integrate a dining and seating area into this vast space. Design Elements To suit the space designer Phil has created a great layout which incorporates all the elements of this project brief, with the bulk of amenities centred around a range cooker. Extra storage is provided in tall units that run all the way towards the dining and living area of this property. The theme is comprised of Virginia shaker furniture from British supplier Mereway in colours sea mist and pebble grey. Traditional features have been included in this project in the form of a butler style sink and herringbone flooring from Karndean. The flooring has been fitted by our expert team, and runs throughout this whole space to create a luxurious feel. The chimney breast surrounding the range looks original, but has been built out by our installation team to add a further traditional element. Phil has added further storage either side of the range in the form of discrete cabinetry. Special Inclusions A key part of this design was creating a communal feel in the kitchen. To accomplish this, great care has been taken to incorporate the seating and dining area into the design making the vast room feel connected. To add to this element a peninsula island has been included with space for three to sit. Around the kitchen, solid quartz surfaces have been opted for, with Silestone’s lusso finish nicely complimenting the theme of the space. Project Highlight To integrate the required storage, designer Phil has used a number of clever solutions to provide organised and maximised storage space. An impressive pantry is built into tall units, with corner units and a pull out pantry also in the design. Feature end unit storage provides a nice place to store decorative cook books. The End Result The end result is a kitchen and dining space the ticks all boxes. A great design incorporates the traditional features, storage requirements and extra inclusions this client desired to create a wonderful kitchen space. Known for its culture and art exhibitions, Whitechapel is a vibrant district in the East End of London and this property reflects just that. If you’re a fan of The Main Company, you will know that we are passionate about rustic, reclaimed materials and this space comprises everything that we love, mixing natural textures like concrete, brick, and wood, and the end result is outstanding. Floor to ceiling Crittal style windows create a light and airy space, allowing the homeowners to go for darker, bolder accent colours throughout the penthouse apartment. The kitchen cabinetry has a Brushed Brass Finish, complementing the surrounding exposed brick perfectly, adding a vintage feel to the space along with other features such as a classic Butler sink. The handless cupboards add a modern touch, creating a kitchen that will last for years to come. The handless cabinetry and solid oaks drawers have been topped with concrete worktops as well as a concrete splashback beneath the Elica extractor.

Windows reaching a grand 12’ in height fully capture the allurement of the area, bringing the outdoors into each space. Furthermore, the large 16’ multi-paneled doors provide the constant awareness of forest life just beyond. The unique roof lines are mimicked throughout the home with trapezoid transom windows, ensuring optimal daylighting and design interest. A standing-seam metal, clads the multi-tiered shed-roof line. The dark aesthetic of the roof anchors the home and brings a cohesion to the exterior design. The contemporary exterior is comprised of cedar shake, horizontal and vertical wood siding, and aluminum clad panels creating dimension while remaining true to the natural environment. The Glo A5 double pane windows and doors were utilized for their cost-effective durability and efficiency. The A5 Series provides a thermally-broken aluminum frame with multiple air seals, low iron glass, argon filled glazing, and low-e coating. These features create an unparalleled double-pane product equipped for the variant northern temperatures of the region. With u-values as low as 0.280, these windows ensure year-round comfort.

We took on the kitchen, two bathrooms and a powder room. The layout in the kitchen was functional for them, so we kept that pretty much as is. Our client wanted a contemporary-leaning transitional look — nice clean lines with a gray and white palette. Light gray cabinets with a slightly darker gray subway tile keep the northern exposure light and airy. They also purchased some new furniture for their breakfast room and adjoining family room, so the whole space looks completely styled and new. The light fixtures are staggered and give a nice rhythm to the otherwise serene feel. The homeowners were not 100% sold on the flooring choice for little powder room off the kitchen when I first showed it, but now they think it is one of the most interesting features of the design. I always try to “push” my clients a little bit because that’s when things can get really fun and this is what you are paying for after all, ideas that you may not come up with on your own. We also worked on the two upstairs bathrooms. We started first on the hall bath which was basically just in need of a face lift. The floor is porcelain tile made to look like carrera marble. The vanity is white Shaker doors fitted with a white quartz top. We re-glazed the cast iron tub. The master bath was a tub to shower conversion. We used a wood look porcelain plank on the main floor along with a Kohler Tailored vanity. The custom shower has a barn door shower door, and vinyl wallpaper in the sink area gives a rich textured look to the space. Overall, it’s a pretty sophisticated look for its smaller fooprint. Before renovating, this bright and airy family kitchen was small, cramped and dark. The dining room was being used for spillover storage, and there was hardly room for two cooks in the kitchen. By knocking out the wall separating the two rooms, we created a large kitchen space with plenty of storage, space for cooking and baking, and a gathering table for kids and family friends. The dark navy blue cabinets set apart the area for baking, with a deep, bright counter for cooling racks, a tiled niche for the mixer, and pantries dedicated to baking supplies. The space next to the beverage center was used to create a beautiful eat-in dining area with an over-sized pendant and provided a stunning focal point visible from the front entry. Should I include a kitchen island?

Kitchen island ideas are abundant these days; it seems most kitchen designs include a kitchen island, if not multiple islands. However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Exposed shelving and storage is also popular for eclectic, Scandi and industrial-inspired looks, so you could opt for glass-fronted cabinets or no wall-mounted cabinets at all. Remember that this will require more restraint in what you can store and more effort in keeping it looking presentable compared to what is stored away hastily behind cupboard doors. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
