In the remodeled kitchen, the homeowners asked for an "unfitted" or somewhat eclectic and casual New England style. To improve the layout of the space, Neil Kelly Designer Robert Barham completely re-imagined the orientation, moving the refrigerator to a new wall and moving the range from the island to a wall. He also moved the doorway from the living room to a new location to improve the overall flow. Everything in this kitchen was replaced except for the newer appliances and the beautiful exposed wood beams in the ceiling. Highlights of the design include stunning hardwood flooring, a craftsman style island, the custom black range hood, and vintage brass cabinet pulls sourced by the homeowners.

Using white as the backdrop color, deep navy blue cabinetry is used on the island and echoes the accent color in the backsplash mosaic tile behind the hood. Glass inserts are strategically integrated into lighted cabinets, adding interest and illumination to the white wall cabinets. The soothing grey beadboard backsplash adds texture and speaks to the beachy aesthetic. To ensure a durable solution especially behind the sink, the bead board is installed above a 5” tall piece of quartz. We opted for a statement chandelier over the dining table in lieu of pendant lighting over the island, and added a single sconce above the window over the farmhouse sink. Additional accent lighting inside the glass cabinets and below the wall cabinets adds ambient and task lighting. Hidden in a dark forest of wood cabinets and brown granite tile counters, the best parts of this mid-century style kitchen were lost. The family’s most loved feature of the existing space was the interior redwood siding than ran through the home so we celebrated its beauty by making it stand out. Removing an enclosed pantry and peninsula opened up the space and allowed us to create a large central island “hub” which functions equally well as a gathering space for parties or a quiet spot for homework. Should I include a kitchen island?

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh.
