This Mid Century inspired kitchen was manufactured for a couple who definitely didn't want a traditional 'new' fitted kitchen as part of their extension to a 1930's house in a desirable Manchester suburb. The walk in pantry was fitted into a bricked up recess previously occupied by a range. This Victorian old house from the beginning of the previous century had to keep its exterior look, but the interior went through a dramatic change and brought it into our era. The first floor of the house was completely transformed into a huge open space, which by doing that already gave it a modern feeling around. The use of modern laminate door style in different colors had emphasized the contemporary style that was brought in with so much elegancy together with the light wood floors and light counter tops. The island was given a sculpture look to create a nice focal point for the kitchen where the cooking preparation is mostly taking place at. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh.
