The Modern Detached.

Modern Living Room, London

Detached homes are not just a series of decorated rooms they require a relationship from the way a home looks to the experience of being in the house. At The Modern Detached we drew inspiration from the Arts and Crafts homes nearby that feel good on the inside…and look good on the outside. Using simple materials and large volumes, strategically thinking about where the sun is and embedding the feeling of Garden Living the home feels like it looks. The home has a series of stunning rooms that open to the sky and landscape and are formed around the movement of the sun. The home is composed from two distinct crafted elements. The more traditional rectangular rooms are contained within a crisp brick and plain tiled ‘house’, typical of the area. The contrasting charred timber-slat clad element interlocks with the brick house and contains the the more dramatic rooms within. The southern and northern facades have brick fin details that give depth to the elevation, inventively incorporating ventilation. The eaves are crisply finished with beautifully cut bricks and recessed integrated gutters. The two elements intertwine to bring a warmth and luxury, creating a stylish, environmentally responsive new house. The main hall is full of light, delicacy and experience with a grand brass staircase climbing through the triple height volume. Light from the south penetrates from a large ocular zenith window and creates strong contrast against the dark timber interior. To the garden a carefully angled glazed threshold creates shading for the south facing sliding doors. A bespoke elliptical dining table sits adjacent to the garden creating a baroque feeling of curvilinear luxury.
