Update -- my plumber finally returned. Not sure what he did while here, but he told me again it wasn't working -- then he did some work on a radiator which had a small leak. We were having a long discussion about options on pumps, new showers, taps etc and I read out the installation guide and he tried it again, and suddenly it worked. It is bizarre as I don't know how many times i tried it previously. My friend who works in construction ALSO called earlier today and tried it several times to no avail. It must have been extremely stiff or perhaps the plumber realised some airlock whilst fixing the radiator since I think water pressure is much stronger since he went. Thanks for everyones help -- i learned lots on plumbing and a valuable lesson to take out the installation manuals myself and not trust that trades men know everything!!! I feel like celebrating!!

As this is the shower area, does it re-appear after a shower and, when the wall is drying out afterwards/ I still think it's grout, and would put money on it. Those are some thick joins, plus the faces of the stone tiles are pitted. Therefore, small amounts of grout would have stuck themselves in the little pitted areas. They won't last forever, and will wash out. I don't believe for a minute that silicone was put over the whole surface of the stones. That doesn't make sense at all. You use stone or tile that is suitable for a wet area, not all tiles or stone are. You use silicone around the joins to seal it, not over the whole surface. If you wipe a clean piece of tissue over the surface of the stone, does it look clean still? Or is it kind of dusty?

On top of the skirting? No way! I think that would look awful. Far too bulky in a sleek designed room. We have an ensuite which has the wall tiles sitting on top of the floor tiles to give the impression of more of a wet room effect. We also have a main bathroom and in here have the floor tiles cut to the size of the skirting that was originally in there height wise and then placed on top of the floor tiles So one room has nothing and the other room has the floor tiles up the wall as a skirting.
