5 quick and easy kitchen makeover tips
Comments (5)Best tip there is to CLEAN the kitchen. I'm far from being the best housekeeper but I'm amazed how proud people are of their new stove/hob/island chairs/microwave, yet the kitchen and items are grubby. Clean up + tidy away all those bits that have ended up in kitchen for no good reason, add in some new utensil holders/fruit bowls, hang up some larger hand utensils or remove them, put away all jam + marmalade jars or clean rhe outside + gather together in a small tray, replace chopping board or get one. Change tea-towels, or just use the clean untattered ones, ditto any table linen, place mats, coasters. Yep clean up + tidy up + tidy away first - then you'll see what'll work quickly + cheaply. Anyway, units have to be cleaner before painting...See MoreHow do you make a rented space feel like home?
Comments (38)We rent unfurnished, so always have our own furniture around us. I don't go in TOO much for the soft furnishings (rugs, cushions, curtains, throws), as they are cluttersome and really interefere with a low-maintenance life. Moreover, sadly, my posters, paintings and photographs have had to stay in storage for about five years, due to increasing fussiness by landlords/ -ladies about holes in the walls. HOWEVER, it is crucial to have ENOUGH of your own things around you, so that the web of YOUR things covers over a space which is, essentially, not yours. Minimalism has definite limits. Our last place had revolting dull mustard yellow walls, which definitely needed covering! Bookcases (with books!), a folding screen/ room divider, tension rods to create hanging rails, and one big rug (for the sitting room) come with us everywhere, like the interior of some sort of nomad's yurt! Seasonal and fresh decorations are another way to decorate a temporary home, and they leave only biodegradable waste, rather than broken MDF or shattered plastic! Leaf-skeletons on a string and rosehip-studded twigs (snap off the thorns!) for autumn (Fall). Holly, ivy and dried wildflowers for winter. Fresh wildflowers for spring and summer. Herbs in the kitchen....See MoreHow can I bring this kitchen to life?
Comments (28)Hi Daniel What a lovely light kitchen! I see you have decided to change the worktop which is a good idea if you don't like the existing (temporary fixes always seem to stay forever in my house, much better to go for a permanent solution if it's within budget!) if you like colours I think the suggested mustard yellow would be good, or teal works really well with white and wood. Also, you mentioned tiled wallpaper, how about some real tiles? I have a new kitchen too, it has very pale grey gloss units and a white quartz worktop and white walls (at the moment, eventually I'm planning to paint them dark grey). It's lovely but a little plain like yours. I found some lovely tiles which are white and grey which sounds very dull. It they introduce pattern which really ties it all together. I think you could choose some tiles with a nice pattern (they don't have to be brightly coloured if that's not your thing). You'd only need 2 rows, not all the way up to the upper units, introducing some pattern could really bring it to life. And perhaps some coloured chairs when you get round to thinking about furniture? Also, how about hanging a picture on the wall below the wall unit above the washing machine? I love a picture in a kitchen! Hope this helps, enjoy decorating your new home!...See MoreKitchen help - what can we do to make it look better?
Comments (65)Depending on how far you budget goes, I would look at adding traditional cornice and pelmet and replacing the plinth with a similar oyster colour. End panels for wall units could also be replaced / added. Some chessboard style tilling in 3 colours would also bring out the walls. It's hard to tell but is the oak surround also on the wall units? I haven't checked your location but this is something we can help with...See Morelilysohara
