Ideas for kitchen extension

Hi. We're looking to do a kitchen extension on our house and I'd really appreciate your input! I was envisaging extending across the whole width of the house but my husband thinks that would be too large and we should just extend two-thirds of the width (to reduce the size of RSJ we'd need amongst other things). If we were to extend the full width, how would we best make use of the space, bearing in mind the current draft plan allows a big utility, which would also be beneficial for the kids coming into the house after playing footy in the garden! Would an extension just being two-thirds width look odd, or is that quite normal? If we went full-width, would the kitchen plus utility work still somehow? The plan in the picture shows the current layout and proposed layout. Thank you!

Comments (6)Hi B W, Yes, the architecture of the space is a bit of a challenge. If all you want is a new kitchen rather than remodeling (hence keeping the footprint of the space the same), may I suggest the following which will give you a breakfast bar, more usable work surface in your kitchen, and enough room in the area opposite you dining room to put lounge seating which will accommodate all of your guests, until you eat together in the dining area: Remove the island - awkward placement and is probably challenging to use effectively when cooking I'd imagine as so far from other appliances and cooking areas. Extend the cabinetry and countertop on the short wall out into a peninsula with breakfast bar (keeping the passageway to enter the kitchen area adequate). An example of this is drawn in my comment for another Houzz question which may help with the visualization of this concept - https://www.houzz.co.uk/discussions/5948686/forever-home-wrong-downstairs-layout-help-please#25741749 In the area left-over, only put lounge seating enough for 8 including pull up poofs or stools (these can also act as side tables with smaller groups) around a small coffee table, rather than an additional eating area (table and chairs) as your dining room is open and so close by. Comments (8)Hi All, Sorry for delay as the project was side-lined for a while. But it’s back in force again and I have the design I wanted. Please see the attached floor plan idea. I am sorry the old floor plan I presented was just copied from estate agent advertisement and it missed the porch which is playing important role in new design. However, there is a problem with the design as it requires to trim some part of the front wall and my Architect is not sure if we can get approval for that. Can I ask you experts if it is advisable to trim the front section? Does it invite cracks sometime in future? The reason behind adding toilet shower in front to make use of soil pipe and avoid heavy digging the floor from middle of house. Also, I am thinking to remove the internal door to give good space. @Rinked, I really liked your design and that is my plan B if my plan doesn’t work out. Comments (4)Hi Tilly, I wanted to draw attention to the living room sofa's vicinity to the bi-fold. You'll be doing a side-shuffle to access the handle to open it up. An additional comment is the side access to your utility space, from the seating area. It is a design and navigational flow detail that may seem superfluous but if you have the space in the utility room to revise this, I would suggest to have access through the kitchen i.e a full length kitchen cabinet that opens to reveal access to the utility room.
