What type of sofa-leather, fabric or velvet ??

Hi,

I'm in a dilemma on what kind of sofa to get. I really like the look of fabric and velvet, but worried they are not practical? I've always had leather and it just seems easiest to maintain?

You can get fabric sofas that are easy to maintain, there's a suede fabric where you can clean out wine stains which a good'en but leather is classic and depending on where you buy it from, it ages well and as you said it is the easiest to maintain

Normally if you go for different seating you can either tie in the style of the sofa or the legs and/or add cushions in the different sofa colours to tie them in. Personally I'd go for a vintage tan leather Chesterfield sofa, tan is neutral and chesterfields tend to sit alongside most styles and it will also suit the room. There are lots of love seats around in different colours. Do you have any idea of what you want and pics? I assume you'll paint to match the loveseat rather than vice versa? Do you already have curtains to consider?

If you're after a specific shade of Blue then I would source the fabric myself (from an Interiors Showroom) and then find an upholsterer to upholster the sofa. I found a sofa with a really nice shape and good quality in a charity shop, covered in really grubby white leather. Cost me £90 inc delivery. Then it cost me £800 to get some fancy fabric and labour. A similar sofa would've cost me £3-4000. That way you can get a really distinct and personal sofa exactly as you want it.

I don't see why you couldn't put a different coloured leather with the original one. It'd be much more difficult to match the existing finish. Even if you got another one from the same company the old one would have worn so they'd look different. I'd go for the creamy leather option, or a natural looking colour of fabric but lighter fabrics are more difficult to keep clean of course.

I used non-slip on my leather sofa- the stuff you put on the floor to stop rugs sliding. It did help keep sofa blankets etc in place but I must confess a fabric sofa (which I now have) is much easier! Alternatively, could you get the back and seat cushions recovered or do it yourself if you have a sewing machine?
