Ahahah! Nowhere near an artist... but I used to score good marks at technical drawings at school! Thank you so much for the floor plans! They are giving me good points to think about! Currently the other half of the island hides an under the counter fridge. However I would prefer not to have a power outlet there... I don't like the idea to drill a hole in the new floor :) Just in case I decide to get rid of the island in future. Also... I have bad news... today the heater engineer told me that the boiler can't be moved into the eaves storage: there isn't enough space. However he came up with a different idea: move it on to the small wall between the stairs and the sink. Ideally I would hide it behind a kitchen cabinet... but I don't plan to get a custom build kitchen... they are just too expensive. So... I can't have a bespoke cabinet. My idea then is to build a short wall there and hide the boiler behind it. If you look at my drawings, you'll see that the wall there is larger than in the original photos... Unfortunately it means that i won't be able to accomodate the refrigerated drawers that you suggested, sorry. I'd like to get rid of the island... unfortunately without it I won't have enough space for all the cabinets and appliances. BTW... I really like your plans! I need to work out how to implement your ideas taking into consideration some of the constrains of the space available.

Hello Dean, Yes budget is important and there may be ways you can shave and save... Knowing where to spend and where not.. So it might be an idea to source your products and appliances individually in some respects... Something from here.. something from there.. Part of what I do is offer procurement and so being a fantastic negotiator is part of it.. Also you can pimp a plainer cabinet front for example with a fabulous handle... There are so many that I could go on and on and on.. but here's a few you might find of interest... You might find that getting a design independently or working with what you have, and using a fantastic kitchen fitter to install, your chosen shopping list! You could get something more bespoke and chosen specifically to your tastes.. rather than buy from a range chosen by any one kitchen company.. Mine I designed was 5k without discounts.. It won't possibly be to your liking but I mention it as it shows what can be done on a really small budget.. Also it's 5 years old and I have changed its appearance 3 times... This is the current look which was for publication... So it's dark but not boring.. : )) Worktop Handles Appliances This is how it started out 5 years ago (below) It's magnolia to say the least translation boring- and it was a bit of a messy day!... It though was right for the (then look) I get bored and my ideas evolve and so I change things, small things sometimes. So you can create very different looks with small changes in colour for example! I think the wickes is preferable but my suggestion is to perhaps use the design and then consider what else you can do! :))

Hello there, I see you've put a lot of thought into kitchen and dinning area and 1 year is not so long time ago. It would be a shame to strip everything off and start from the begging. I think we can fix easily what you've got there! First when I see your kitchen, I don't see blue, I see slim kitchen cabinet with slim handles and chunky metro tiles back splash. Along with this fact, tile colour starts dominating in the room and it shouldn't happen. Tiles should be an accent but not dominant. Moreover It stands out on its own and doesn't work with blue. I would start from fixing kitchen colour. Get colour tone or two darker than your tiles. I would suggest Natural taupe 1 Dulux. It is rich and warm colour. It will calm kitchen down, in a matter colours are not blending and not matching at the moment. Rich taupe will come tone darker than your tiles and will make white kitchen stand out more. It sounds like paradox but using rich (darker) neutral tone, you brighten your kitchen up. White will stand out and this is your first impression when you enter - light, clean kitchen. Here is internet example of Taupe1 Dulux Moreover, taupe is quiet warm tone and will make kitchen more cozy and it will play well with tiles and flooring. Paint three walls: behind cabinets, wall around window and double doors wall around door. Wall with 3 pictures in the dining room leave blue as a feature. It is great way to show that this area is separate. Blue curtains will show up better with neutral background, leave it. As for pendant in dining room, choose something white to complement white kitchen cabinets. Bring a little bit of white colour to this side. I will agree with comment above that you should add fresh and may be a little bit bright colour in the kitchen. You will have 2 areas in one space, it will give you a right to add roller or Roman blinds with mustard (muted yellow) with grey or blue or teal in pattern) on a window. Add pots with green herbs or even faux grass in pots from Ikea. Your kitchen and dining will look fab with this few changes. Alena, Cheers

Thanks for your comments so far; it’s really helpful to get other points of view. Maths Wife, I’m with you on the pantry idea! In fact, I spent a long time trying to work out if we could put one there by getting decent-width access to the garden via another route. But coming through from the front door involves a narrow hallway and getting through several internal doors, and coming via the utility room would involve losing washing space to add a door, and a sharp right-hand turn. Apart from the fact that we’ll ultimately re-landscape our entire garden, which will all need to come through the house, I also sometimes use a mobility scooter, and although I don’t intend to take it into the house, I’d rather be safe than sorry in terms of access. We’re compensating for the lack of pantry by planning on turning the area outside those doors into a little shaded patio with small table/chairs. So in theory we could have those doors wide open in the summer, and have garden views from both ends of the kitchen. minnie101, I didn’t explain the meals for 30 very well . We set up another table in the playroom in those cases, so about half the people in each room. So in the kitchen I just want to make sure that we can have table fully extended whenever we need it, which seats about 14. For the drinks area, yes we’re debating having bifold doors so there is max countertop space for a small sink, kettle etc. As you say, it makes sense and saves the countertop space elsewhere, just makes for an expensive cupboard The roof lantern size is indeed limited by the fact that’s the only area of the kitchen that isn’t double storey. Other than squaring out a corner, we are keeping to the current footprint, as it’s just about on maximum extension already. That area, in a bizarre design choice by the previous owners, is currently the utility room, which just about blocks any view onto the garden - we need the lights on even in summer, despite that being a south facing view. I’ve spent most of the last 6 years trying to understand WHY someone would choose that layout as part of a fairly substantial extension, even going so far as to move the kitchen, which was south facing, to the other end of the room. I’ve yet to think of a sensible explanation…. We are going for a fairly timeless/modern country look, hence the orangery rather than bifolds, and also want to maximise the light as it’s a long room. Fingers crossed, it will look something like this, although with a lot more planting around it and step-free patio.
