Old hot air duct renovation

Hi All! So we just bought this 1930s house and are now trying to fix it ourselves. There are these things in all bedrooms that back in the days were used for the fire powered heating. We can't decide what to do with them and on top of that my husband is very keen to get them running again so we use the fire heating as well as the modern one. But it looks quite bad as for me and I'd like to modernize it. Can anyone suggest anything please?

I had warm air heating in my old house when I moved in, is this what it is? Will it even be very economical to run this type of heating, especially if by the sounds of it, you also need to install modern heating? I'd be tempted to get rid, I think you'll find that once you start to remove the ducting and the housing for it that you'll get quite a bit more space in the rooms too. I also think it would be quite difficult to modernise the ducting and get a finish you'd be happy with. Sorry to be all doom and gloom, but sometimes some things aren't worth saving from an economical or aesthetic point of view! Good luck and let me know how you get on!

Thanks for your reply, Angela. Yep, it was an old warm air heating. We started removing it and discovered some very nice fireplaces underneath :) So our house has traditional features now! Not sure if we will be able to get them running but it is definitely making the room look nicer.

Appreciate it was winter when you posted this, but we've got the same in a a bungalow. I was staggered it was still working. We've been quoted around £5k for a vented system (rather than combi as its too big a bungalow to make that vfm and advantageous). I don't really understand heating systems either but the air/storage is difficult to control especially if you're out at work - you have to plan ahead and guess how warm you want it later, don't you? We knew we were buying a do-er upper and the heating was going to be done. I think £5k is a good investment and will more than pay us back in any future maintenance of the air system and ultimately through the end property value. On this one occasion, I would go with convention.m hope you've been happy with your decision if you've done it already.

Hi Alant1000, An extractor not only helps to remove odours from cooking but it also makes cleaning the kitchen easier, removing some of the grease that would otherwise settle throughout the room. Extractors do however come in many shapes and sizes, in terms of aesthetics you could opt for a pendant extractor which appears as a pendant light or you could choose a downdraft extractor, which will be hidden within the worktop. It's difficult to give you a definitive answer but we certainly design all our clients' kitchens with appropriate extraction. Hi all, Thank you so much for all the helpful comments and suggestions, and sorry that it's taken me so long to respond - house renovation and work have been keeping us on our toes! This has become a long post, so a quick reminder - we were looking to renovate and rewire our 60s house to update it and also make it more wheelchair friendly downstairs for when my mother-in-law comes to visit. We employed an architect and came up with what turned out to be an 'aspirational' design (much more than the budget!) so we ended up deciding to split things into two stages: Stage One to add a downstairs wetroom for accessibility, remove chimney throughout and add a porch Stage Two to do the extension across the rear, removing the conservatory to open out a large kitchen/diner and add a utility room The layout below shows both Stages One and Two as complete. Bits shown in red are existing walls which have been/will be removed (apart from the wall in red in the seating area below which is between the existing kitchen and dining room - that's a mistake). So.....the building work is now done - hurray! Stage One is complete, we are much poorer, and we now need to decorate the whole house :-) Some before and after photos below - please bear with the terrible photography skills. The rooms aren't big enough to allow for expansive photos!: We've re-plastered throughout, apart from in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom, as we'll deal with those later. Current challenge is deciding how on earth to pick paint colours and flooring throughout.... Anyway - hopefully that gives you a sense of where we've got to. Best wishes

Sorry Mat not sure if I follow. Are you having storage put in by the door? There is no storage labelled on your plans. If so, then visually speaking, the room starts from where the floor starts not from where the wall behind the cabinets starts. So if you have the same distance from both sides i.e. from right wall and from the left cabinet, it will still look symmetrical. Do you see how the room starts from the door of the cabinet and not from the splash back behind the sink? Here the column between the doors looks the same size as the wall next to the cabinets, whereas in reality the wall is at least 60cm wider. Again here the door appears to be in the centre of the room but in reality the wall on the left hand side is much wider because it carries on behind the cabinets. The designer has cleverly placed a T.V. there to stop the eye from noticing the rest of the wall. The same effect can be achieved with floor to ceiling cabinets. Was that what you were asking about or have I gone way off?

Oh brilliant- now they're worth saving! Much better than those old ducts eh?! I think even if you never use a fireplace, especially in bedrooms, they still look great. Good to see the pics :-)
