Layout suggestions for existing ground floor/extension wanted
Comments (2)I wonder if maybe your planned snug is extremely small, compared to all the open plan space? Also, you seem unsure what it's going to be used for, which could lead to it becoming a 'nothing' room. It can't be both playroom and office without causing a lot of tension! Really think about how you like to use the different spaces in your house at the moment, and what is missing. I would personally use the intended snug as an office, use the current kitchen as a playroom - and keep those walls. I'd also build a new wall between the current dining room and kitchen to keep the office and playroom separate! Then I would remove the wall between the living room and conservatory and the dividing wall in the conservatory, put the dining room as you have on your plan, but move the kitchen to the bottom left corner of the drawing. That's just my opinion though - you have to think about what would work for you!...See MoreHelp! Advice wanted to change 1980s house exterior. Suggestions?
Comments (21)I would suggest as others have, a bigger porch, will allow you more storage as well, particularly when it's wet outside. Also, perhaps render or paint the extension and porch to tie them together, but to do the whole thing might be too blocky and monolithic. Do the windows work for you from the inside? You might find that if, for example, you do the porch and extension in white, the windows aren't so obvious. If they don't work for you, look at making them larger and more symmetrical. They seem quite small for the house....See MoreWhat to cover a pergola with?
Comments (11)I agree with MBH about the timbers. But an alternative for covering would be to use a canvas sail under the timber attached to the posts. You can get them in many colours and sizes. They are waterproof and can easily be removed and stored away if you don't want the shade....See MoreHow can I add privacy to my corner garden on busy road? Ideas needed!
Comments (7)Do not despair, there is a lot you can do to make your garden more secluded with new fencing and clever planting. Is this your only garden? Can I ask whether there is any covenant preventing you from having a taller fence? If not, then can I suggest a 5’ solid fence all round, with a gate. Most dogs will easily jump over your current fence and I’m sure you want to keep your dog safe. If a solid fence is not allowed, then a tall picket fence will do the job, or add taller panels to your current fence as in the second pic. I think a pergola in one corner will give you some more privacy, and you can plant climbers on it for even more privacy (first pic). You can buy them as a flat pack or get a carpenter to make and build one for you. You can add comfy seating, and a doggy bed, under it so you can enjoy your garden on warm days. Now for the planting. I think tall shrubs will create a secret garden effect which will drown out traffic noise and visitor noise! Things like evergreens Viburnum tinus, Ceanothus, Photinia and Choisya ternata Sundance. They can be the bones of your garden. Then add shrubs that are deciduous but add colour in the spring and summer, things like Shrub Roses, Hibiscus, dwarf Lilac, Cotinus and Climbers like Clematis, Star Jasmine, Honeysuckle and climbing roses. These need a wall or trellis or an obelisk to climb up. I can see you have some planting already which is great. The final addition to the planting is perennial flowers and bulbs, but the planting above will create a cosy garden, if you don’t want more planting. Here’s a few pics to inspire you and hopefully reduce your despair! 😊...See Morelmahoney104
