What kind of new units/work surface will work with early 60s kitchen?
Comments (8)Just wanted to say what a fantastic kitchen. So pleased you're keeping it! Formica would be the period correct work surface and can still be bought but may not fit with your budget? I would also look at having a carpenter produce your cabinets. They can be cheaper than off the shelf and would be better build. To save some money you could buy cheap plain carcasses and have a carpenter make doors to match the existing ones that you can then paint. That's what i'd do!...See Morefreestanding kitchen unit made into a sink unit .
Comments (10)It's not so much that it's difficult, it's a bit time consuming as you have to have enough of the wood ( spare drawer fronts ) to make a cupboard door with. In fact you probably will need extra wood that matches as you need a frame for the door, if not for that but definitely for inside to deck out the new cupboard. Same applies to the smaller one. Thankfully it's raw pine, so it's very easily available. You will of course have a bit of extra wood from the hole that you cut for the sink, so the carpenter may be able to utilise that for the door! It also has to be finished with something waterproof by the way!...See MoreKitchen units, ceiling height 2.8m, how high do you take units up to?
Comments (5)Tall units up to the ceiling can look very nice, although would function as displays mostly. Honestly standard height kitchen wall units wouldn't concern me, they might accentuate the height which is not a bad thing at all. Alternatively if you have enough storage in the base units why not skip wall units altogether? Open shelves or even nothing, just a stunning splashback...See MoreChanging individual kitchen units and extend island
Comments (6)There is no budget way to do the changes you would like. Adding a larger sink to the island would in all probability involve changing the unit below and the work surface if it is an undermount sink. I cannot tell from your photograph. These costs in labour alone would be considerable not to mention a new island worktop. You may be able to swap in your fridge/freezer by removing some of the tall units. Try and find out who supplied the kitchen if you like the style and colour and see if you can get a quote from them. They will also tell you what is possible....See MoreLex McMillan Architects Ltd
