Hi there. Completely agree with everyone, you should paint the cupboards. I really like the colours in this picture as I think that the slightly 'greyer' off white cupboards would tie in well with your beautiful grey tiles. You wouldn't necessarily have to go so light on your worktop as in this picture. The laminate you showed in your third picture is really nice, where is it from? Currently doing my kitchen and trying to find a laminate that I like!

well you certainly got my grey matter working on a sunday morning- i'm currently redesigning my own and a family members kitchen so have been full swing in this thought process for some time! I live in UK too so know how difficult it is to work in these spaces- (is the kitchen on side of house? is there garden space behind the cooker/hob wall?) Two questions though are necessary: 1 ) What are dimensions of room? (I'm guessing about 18ft long, by 9ft wide -measuring to the window sill- excluding the 1ft outer wall depth) 2 ) What is your budget? Enough to only stretch to replacing kitchen units? or a whole remodel- moving gas pipe/sink position etc. Are you keeping the floor? I've attached two room designs that I think would work well (assuming you have 9-10ft width to play with). Both I think will give a better flow to the room, and allow you to add the wow factor. Think about how you want to use the space not just the aesthetic look. The first design swaps the layout, and the second- you can have the sink and hob in the island. The best way to keep costs down would be to spend money on the island/kitchen cabinetry and granite/concrete worktop- but use full height MODULAR wall cabinet shelving (any joiner could do, or buy standard shelves/open cabinetry from ikea or affordable places like this)- to keep costs down and open shelving would suit your industrial style too. Interestingly you mention its a 1930s house- are there art deco features in your house? Both industrial and art deco styles have things in common- monochrome colour palette, reflective surfaces (mirrors/stainless steel), architectural elements (strong straight lines/grids- consider crittal windows?? perfect for both designs) and grey would suit both. If you want more industrial style- consider exposed brickwork also. If you can't afford bifold doors- consider French doors and full height window panels either side to give the same effect On reflection- I realise Jo DP and I seem to be on similar lines of thought! WOW, what amazing ideas - who's up for forming an Interior Design Company around the UK - could be great fun! One thing not mentioned is that I would move the microwave immediately and put it where it has work surface at each side for safety. Where the micro was put a huge shallow glass brightly coloured bowl (TK Maxx/Ikea) and fill with either different coloured glass 'eggs' - Murano, Caithness etc, adding from each holiday or, which I've also done, fill with coloured crystal bauble string lights - I just drop them in and switch on when I feel like it. I've just bought a stunning Lava lamp - pink for my kitchen - tho' they come in a number of colours. There are some really funky fish tanks around too. I have a pink one shaped like a cats head ( lol as I have cats) and a square one, very architectural, with viewing 'shapes' cut out. They're no more then 6 inches high and some colourful fish prefer to be solo, or would you kill them along with the plants? Lol. Hope you manage to find great advice from all who answered you. Bee

Hello Amanda, : )) Do you mean in the kitchen? Yes a nice idea. I like flat plate too, but really plain. Well the best way to describe how I feel about certain alterations is to tell you about someone I knew who "did up" her flat to such a degree that she literally took away all that was characterful about it.. Sometimes it's best to leave things as their patina develops over time and results in something quite special. Restoration is one thing but you can also restore the life out of something and thus diminish in certain contexts the value- and so it's good to know when to stop.. So yes, I'm firmly in the camp suggesting leave them, but of course it's entirely your choice. : ))

Starmark Cabinetry has a similar cabinet called Lafontaine. For colors I would recommend looking at Macadamia, Marshmallow Cream, Mushroom, Ivory Cream or White. As for countertops it looks similar to Carrara Marble but you can also find this look from several quartz manufacturers.

These cabinets are from our signature line of custom cabinetry. We do everything from full overlay to inset. The ones you see in this kitchen are inset with a polished chrome hinge.
The counter top on this island is a built up calacutta marble.
