Need advice on flooring for our entrance with stairs going up and down

Our entrance has stairs going up and stairs going down (the house is on three levels). Need advice on what flooring to have so that the house/space flows and we don't end up with too many types of flooring. Currently we have sisal carpet in the entrance and on both sets of stairs - the stairs going down lead on to carpet, the stairs going up lead on to carpet.
The carpet is looking old and tired and I'm wondering whether to get the carpet replaced or have a new more modern/fresh look and have wooden floor or tiles instead. However I don't know if either would be noisy or suitable. Am not keen on carpet runners! Any advice would be appreciated!
