What colour to add??
Comments (26)Agree with the need for some colour in cushions and artwork especially, but I also think you need some plants. If you’re worried about looking after them there are lots that are virtually indestructible e.g. succulents...See MoreLiving Room colour - All 4 walls the same?
Comments (8)Hello Jules - I really like your choices of wallpaper. Both greens are really soft and relaxing colours; perfect for a sitting room. I love the Cole & Son wallpaper too but I don't think it would work as a feature wall alongside the greens. In fact, I think feature walls have had their day and you would be better off to go with the green paper on all four walls. The light wooden floor will look super with the green and if you do the woodwork in white/off-white then it will look clean & crisp. You mentioned that you were finding the room a little echo-y. You'll probably find that it'll be less noticeable when you have the dining furniture in the room and the curtains hung. If it still feels a little echo-y then you might consider putting down a large rug to absorb some of the sound. It also has the added effect of making the room look cosier. I hope this is of some help. Best wishes, Jessica Jessica Buckley Interiors...See MoreShould we keep our old fireplaces?
Comments (34)The Edwardian fireplace is the correct proportion and age for the house. Hard to tell if it is actually original to the house or if it is Mahogany or Oak, but don't paint it. Wood has a beauty of its own if treated with a natural finish like Beeswax and the patina of age adds to the beauty. Certainly don't varnish it. One of the reasons it appears heavy in the photo is the oak surround on the hearth tiles. My advice would be to remove the wood hearth surround and install a wood floor in the room (perhaps oak and slightly lighter in colour than the fireplace butting up to the tiled hearth). This will will compliment the fireplace and ground it. You could remove the tiles (normally I would keep original tiles) but the cream and maroon colours in this instance do give an overall heaviness and don't particularly enhance the fireplace, however I would leave the tiles for the moment. The finished scheme should look classy and elegant with a neutral colour palette. If this is going to be a working fireplace than you may consider a grey slate hearth. This is the focal point of your room so getting it right is key. Wherever possible conserve original features. The 1930's fireplace on the opposite side would appear original and most likely installed in the 30's. It is charming but not proportionally correct for an Edwardian house. But because it tells a story and is original I would be loath to remove it. Selling it on would be tricky as the tiles will most likely damage when removing them. I would keep both fireplaces as they will both sit well in a neutral colour scheme with a wooden floor....See MoreKitchen wall colours. Add a splash of colour?
Comments (7)So we have decided on Wimborne White on all walls. We plan to add 2 or 3 very large pictures on the radiator wall. If we still feel this is plain we can repaint either this wall or the one with the shelves. Header13 we really like blue and have used it in our south facing bedroom. Carolina I'm afraid to say no. Picking the floor seems to be by far the hardest decision. We really cant decide on light vs (warm) medium grey. We have so many samples and I think it is just making it worse. We feel light should help keep the room bright but could make it all too plain and samey? Darker may give better contrast and more interesting? Lighting in the kitchen is currently really poor (we took the lights down for plastering as they are being replaced) but here is some pictures showing examples of flooring shades we are considering. Most of the colours seem to be falling in these two camps. White oak vs a grey/smoke oak....See Morehavingfun
