Hi, the trees were in the garden before we redesigned it, so I don't know what the trees are on the right, although the colour change is seasonal as the photo was taken In Autumn. The trees to the left are Acers, again going through the autumnal colour change.

Hi there and congratulations on owning a new home. Regarding what to do with the outside space, especially the front, I would suggest a few tips to improve the and feel of the area. Introducing a lawn would be a nice place to start. The place will look natural, and plus this may double as play area for kids in future.Flowers and flower pots near the entrance will also enhance the look and feel of the area, making the space more vibrant and energeticYou may also consider one or two large trees to the back of the house, if there is a backyard. Just like flowers, the place will look more natural and probably even larger.Apart from the natural elements additions to the space, it may also be important to use curbs and pavements to define paths from the green areas. This will hugely improve on the organisation of the area. There is no such thing as a no maintenance garden, but choosing trees and shrubs only will be less maintenance. Obviously grass will need cutting throughout the summer. I noticed through the broken fence that your neighbour has several trees and shrubs so that’s the sort of thing I mean. Some trees do become huge (50-100 ft) so make sure there are no buildings or paths nearby. Shrubs vary in size from small ones such as Hebe (about 2 ft high) to tall ones such as Viburnums which grow to about 10 ft high. Hedges such as box or privet are quite labour intensive as they do need trimming. Shrubs that are small and stay small would be a better idea - things like Euonymous, Hebe, Cistus and Lavender. The saying “Right Plant in the Right Spot” is so true. If the planting area is sunny, don’t put shade lovers there as they will shrivel up. Soil type is also important, a Rhododendron needs an acid soil and will never thrive is alkaline (chalky) soil. You can get cheap soil testers at any garden centre. I do think you can mix planting styles - I have all sorts in my garden! It looks a lovely big garden so I am rather jealous!

Thank you, Printesa and T Grey, I didn’t see your messages until now. It’s been 2 months since we bought it and I am still not over the shock of being so lucky to wake up and see that view every day. We’ve been busy, very busy actually, trying to find tradesmen to sort out some things. Firstly, we discovered 5 wasps nests and (unfortunately but necessary) had them destroyed by this very chatty guy. Then we noticed some gutters were blocked and had another chatty chap around to clean them. Then came the chimney sweeper, the guy who is going to sand&varnish the floors, the painter-decorator, electrician, and so on. Plus we ‘inherited’ a gardener (thank the gods!) I was having nightmares thinking about maintaining all that garden on my own. Also, our architect friend agreed to take on the barn renovation and already submitted a pre-application plan to the council. So everything is on track; however I am ‘not allowed’ (says Andrew) to buy any furniture until the interior renovations are done, I had to restrict myself at getting tableware and bedding and towels (John Lewis had wonderful stuff on sale last month). I’ll probably start pestering this forum soon! I’m rubbish at choosing blinds and curtains and the likes, plus I am unclear about how to furnish a couple of rooms. There are virtually no paint colours that are true 'grey' as in made from pure black and pure white. They are all a 'colour'. Paint companies could help us out by naming the 'mother hue' - for example, Downpipe would be blue, but if they were to do that, we would not buy millions of test pots and that would mean they would make a lot less profit. Additionally, they could simply explain what hue the various colours belong to and describe how the colour may change in different lights. If only companies such as Farrow and Ball had on their website a boxy North, South, East and West facing room which showed their colours at different times of day we would all be so well informed. Of course, they pay lip service to this by making little suggestions, but in reality they could go much further. In addition I do wonder if we are often seduced by a beautiful room with lovely period details than the actual 'colour'. I sound cynical because I am.
