How would you design this bedroom? I want it calm, cosy & bright :)
Hi,
I am redecorating my bedroom (first decoration project ever) and I'd really appreciate help. What would you do with it if you were redesigning/redecorating it?
The oak furniture has to stay, and I'd like to keep the bedding (I love it!) and I'd like to get rid of the radiator cover.
The colours I like are Farrow and Ball Cornforth White for walls/Wevet for ceiling with yellow accents. But I'm a total novice so I'm interested in feedback, advice or alternative ideas.
Also any idea on lampshades, bedside lamps and drapes/curtains? The road looks over to a busy road so I need something to give privacy. Plus - what would you hand over the bed?

Orange will only serve to accentuate this and bring little to the scheme. Blue is a contrast to orange, so you may want to consider this. The headboard is an issue as it holds the bed together so not sure how smooth replacing it could be. It seems all agree regarding the pictures so down they will come. Leaning towards the curtains, too. Thank you! Jen - The feature wall and knitted throw is a common theme so something I'll look to invest in! Just a case of what way to go with the feature wall and how to have the other walls tied in to it. Hmmm Minnie - as always, thank you. I actually looked at Hague blue but thought it was just too dark, although I'm torn again after seeing that picture. I might get some samples, as I like the contrast and it goes with a few ideas I saw. I had been thinking about a colour more like the one at the top of this post (which I can't move for whatever reason), which isn't too far from Hague blue (not sure of the exact colour right now but recall seeing it). I assume you'd move the bed closer to the window to allow more space with the drawers being by the door. The table by the bed wasn't the best as it's so high and the bed is rather low - to be honest I'll likely move the console table out the room at some point; not decided yet. I need to get a pendant light but figured I'd get it once doing the bigger things - the current light shade is looking very sorry for itself. Comments (51)Yes you’re right about that Love your home bed, the wings are deeper than our wardrobes (which are half recessed) so if we had little shelf bedsides they’d be really hard to reach, we‘d have to sit up and reach around the wings. If I’m honest I don’t think we can face doing anything too complicated like false wall or moving the sockets to allow for the full width headboard! New lights.... maybe... husband is predictably Not Keen. So, I think that boils it down to the naturalmat Prideaux bed, in linen 😁 with the bigger headboard size if they will do that. I’m up for painting that section of wall though - we could either use the mid grey green shown on the door, or a much darker grey green (the mid is Blanket and the dark is Squid Ink, both Paint & Paper library). If we use the mid paint then the bed colour would be dark and vice versa. Linen curtains - need to look at all my samples in the room later on today! Comments (14)The Glass Warehouse bottom pic is where my mind went with this. Id go for a plain silver/light grey rug. Always look great against dark wood. Remove curtains altogether, replace with a plain pale grey or white black out roller blind, straight edge. Looks like theres room to have larger chests of drawers, stick to similar dark wood. Pure plain white bedding, then accent with a mix of green and silver/grey, green and a darker grey cushions, bring in some pattern here and plain ones , perhaps to break it up. you could also add a throw blanket ovrr right corner of the bed, could be black to tie in with chandeliier?? Then a couple of big lamps to fill space on the back wall, simple shades in a pale/silver grey. Well it's a nice room and even though there isn't a huge amount of space. You are quite right with your colours..
Have a look at whitening by Little Greene and this may be nice with Wevet. Then you can add the pale yellow accents. Matt and chalky walls.Then maybe add some of those colours to the bed too to compliment.
The rad cover isn't that awful and offers you somewhere to put a few things. I'd leave it exactly as it is, when you paint the walls it will blend more with the room and the furnishings. It may be nice to hang some of those pictures and maybe create something nice behind the bed..Textures and layering the bed will work well here but light so the bed blends with the walls. In this way it seems less solid and the wardrobes in turn feel like they have more space.
Or you could work this the other way around and paint the wardrobes to blend with the wall colour if you wanted but I rather like the warm feel of the wood...Another thought...Is there perhaps a way to re- arrange the wardrobes to split them up ? Maybe the chest of drawers under the window and move the bed along slightly.. Possibly put one wardrobe where the chest of drawers was. Discard the side tables in favour of wall lighting behind the bed and possibly a small shelf each side.. Then maybe something like a juju hat hanging over the bed. You want to treat it with anti moth but this could be a nice way to add colour and texture.. Something white with flecks of light brown and Design my world has one! :))

Thanks for your insight. That's really interesting about the colour for the bed - I was going to go with these cushions (and make them up in velvet) but I may go for grey now. Also my husband hates throw cushions (and will never make the bed if we have more than two) so that may have to be my limit for layering the bed.
In terms of the furniture - I definately wsnt to keep the oak as I live the warmth too. I really like your suggestion about the layout. Im considering whether I should move the room round to try it out first.

8 years agoThis is a really lovely space and it sounds like you have a clear concept of the colour scheme and general design of the room. If you're looking for some finishing touches, I would always suggest a floor lamp to brighten up the whole room whilst creating a calming and cosy feel.
I think the below styles would work well - something contemporary to add warmth without detracting from the vivid yellow cushions and printed bedding. These models are pretty pricey but I know you can find similar styles for a fraction of the price!
Also, I'm sure a cosy rug would pull the look together. Who can resist that soft warm feeling stepping onto a furry rug on a cold morning?! :)

8 years agoNo problem at all. It's lovely when you're at the decorating stage - adding those finishing touches can really make a massive difference! I think a floor lamp could work really well in the corner opposite the window. Thinking about it, a curved lamp (similar to below) would also add a soft glow to the whole bedroom without taking up too much space.
As for shelves and ceiling/mounted lights - this could work well, although I guess it depends how much you could store on the shelving without it looking too cluttered! Have you considered both? You could keep the bedside tables and add a simple shelving unit (similar to below) above if you really need the space?

8 years agoI would dye or buy voile curtains to match the yellow, plus rug and throw to match then keep raidiator cover but paint all over same colour as walls so it blends with with walls and is less obvious. Having a feature light in the corner to left of the bed is good idea keep it warm effect maybe a candle to give soft light as its a bedroom? Dk where you are in the world but here are some examples from the UK. Good luck:)

Phase one complete! I've gone for Cornforth White for the walls (the room is South facing k11agl) and Wevet for the ceiling. And we've chosen to keep the skirting wooden.
Decorating was loads of fun! Here's what the walls look like (excuse the mess... husband took the photo)...
I'm now stuck on the curtains/blinds. Firstly I need an alternative to net curtains, that means people can't look right in. And then something a bit more substantial that blacks out the light. I would like something soft and airy ideally... but can't find anything that's hit the spot...
Any ideas? Thank you :)

8 years agoOoh btw, if you are planning to get table lamps on each side of the bed, we recently bought these from habitat, very nice against Cornforth White or our charleston grey accent wall (not with Cornforth White, that would be wrong!!) and then are at £10 each at the moment, bargain!!

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoGone through my album of our very own decorating therapy journey and found these. I hope you can see the roller black-out in the first photo, it's tucked inside the recess of the window. The Duette is a peachy colour which looks a lot lighter colour in the north-facing sun. The one in the five panel window is the room below, it does not have the roller blind but the curtains are black out. They are not as efficient in blocking out light as the roller in recess though. the curtains are from Hamilton McBride, only reason i got them were because not many wide (350cm) curtains are cheaply available on Amazon... If your room is not too cold, you can also consider wooden venetian, mine is in white colour as you can see from the 'blue room' (it's F&B's new Vardo btw), which is on the ground floor of the north facing side. 247 does oak colour too. Many neighbours asked us where we got those from!! They look great at a good price - those two windows cost me just under a £100 - but they are not the most energy efficient. They are okay blocking out light but if you have it in the south-facing room, it might not be quite enough. Do go to 247blinds and request some free samples, it's worth a try. Hope this helps! ;)

I had a similar search for a light grey paint for my spare bedroom. I wanted to keep the walls light as it is north facing. I tried Cornforth White by F&B but it was too dark for me. I ends sup choosing Thimblecase by Dulux timeless classics. It dries lighter than when you paint it on so don't panic. It's a very gentle grey so maybe grab a sample and see if you like it? Good luck with the decorating! Pics are of it in day and lamp light, excuse the lack of furniture!

I really like your choice of paint colour, I'm thinking of doing my hall in the same so it's great to see some samples of it!
For your blinds I think a roller blind in a light sheer fabric would work really well to keep the airy feel of your room, while also giving you your privacy. Frost white fabric is shown below, but Chenille and Soft White from our collection would work just as well. You could then pair with curtains to add a feeling of luxury.

8 years agoHaha great!! I like something 'special'. Typography is usually my type of thing and I love one with all of london's boroughs shaped out in a map, but that doesn't quite suit a bedroom!! Also that narrow space is tricky, either a panoramic piece or two or three ones lined up (which is a bigger challenge!!) I've some city shots, some landscape ones, even vintage cars but none of them feels right! Probably need something arty I think. Btw, took a photo of the blackout blind in action ;)
