Comments (47)Hi again Ramona! Thank you so much for your interest - you have to let me know if you're ever in Wales and let me buy you a drink! We haven't done anything to the room in the last week; a couple of friends came by and said they like it (and then moved promptly to the cinema room which is much more exciting). What we manage to do is actually decide on a design of the shelving/ cabinets going in the alcove; that in itself is a great achievement, as I always tend to like at least 2 totally different designs and then take forever to choose one. Anyway, below are two photos of the style we would like to have. I know you suggested no floating shelves; however I'm not ready to go all the way traditional - I've not grown up that much! I like the clean look in those photos and we would probably go with the black and white scheme. Also, I've decided to use the 'bulls eye' painting on top of the mantel, which would throw out the purple theme and bring a red-orange one! But that is why I prefer the background (walls, sofas) to be neutral - I can then play with different colour schemes without too much trouble, just new rugs and cushions and paintings and you have a completely new look! And that's why I think classic (not traditional, but classic) works best, you can always accessories with whatever's the current trend and then change easily when it becomes dated. I guess living in the UK made me adhere to their way of thinking (although I made an exception with the kitchen!) The other 'close contender' was this other photo - they also have the shutters we would be getting next week. Apart from the high gloss, that style looks more formal to me because the shelves are 'anchored' in the cabinet, not the walls. We haven't decide if we're going to paint the ceiling or not - I think you were right and it would create a bit of drama with the pendant - I guess we would decide after everything else is in place. Many thanks again, Luciana...See Morebuilt in same colour as walls or woodwork?
Comments (31)You certainly have the height to carry such a look but I wonder whether you would lose the definition in some of that beautiful cornice? I like ceilings painted the same colour as the walls. I considered one shade lighter (ie ammonite) to have a slight contrast. You could also paint the cornice white and the ceiling cornforth but I think that is a more traditional look. On balance my favourite would be the cornice and ceiling painted one shade lighter. What have you done in the rest of the house with the ceilings?...See MoreHelp!!! More tiling issues!!!!! Kitchen backsplash this time...
Comments (32)Tiles are one way to introduce some pops of colour in your kitchen. If you are worried about the grout discolouring, use epoxy grout which is more resilient to liquid staining. Also, if you use a coloured grout, discolouration will be less noticeable. If you choose textured tiles with rectilinear edges, grout lines are almost invisible. Using tiles can look more traditional compared to glass or stainless steel. The problem with stainless steel is keeping it looking good. Drip marks and grease are instantly noticeable. Glass is less obvious when splashed. They are both more industrial and modern looking. What about using the same material that makes up your worktop as the splashback? Most manufacturers of manmade worktops also do an 11mm thick splashback and upstand....See Morepaint colour for shaded south facing room
Comments (20)Hi. Is this a new house? Just wondering if you’d thought about cutting back some of the trees if possible? You might also be able to add something reflective in the garden ie water feature, mirror, light stone (can’t work out if you have decking down). I can’t say for sure but I’m not sure the colour of the wood makes any difference to the amount of light it bounces. I’ve got a walnut floor which bounces loads of light, I also inherited a really dark granite worktop in an east facing room but because it has a glossy finish it doesn’t darken the room at all. I’d get some floor samples in the room and see how reflective they are. Personally I might also choose the paint last (and after the floor is fitted) as there are thousands of paint colours and it’s relatively cheap compared to furniture. You could also consider adding a really large mirror on the long left hand wall. Also look at other reflective surfaces maybe a glass and brass coffee table, metal and glass for lighting etc. Are the curtains new?...See Moremarajah74
