Engineered wood and underfloor heating.. good idea or not?

Getting conflicting and confusing info and advice on whether it's really OK to have engineered wood and underfloor heating. All the flooring manufacturers say it's fine, our builder says yes, engineered is possible and better than solid wood flooring, but still not a good idea. It reduces heat efficiency and inevitably you get some 'lift' due to moisture. Interested to hear of others experience and opinion. Thanks

Hello@jones1978, We had the UFH installed 4 years ago and when researching it, I didn't even consider rugs and trapped heat; my thinking was that is 'they' say you can use carpet, a rug wouldn't make a difference. Well, as I discovered, it depends. If your rug is one of those heavy, high density knots wool rugs, the chances are that it will keep the heat trapped. However, a rather light, either cotton, sisal, viscose or thin wool rug doesn't seem to affect the overall temperature. I think the overall room temperature also depends on your insulation. The office room in the photos above is basically an internal room, it has no exterior walls or windows, so we actually rarely put the heating on in there even in December - and hubby works from home most of the week. Our living room, on the other hand, is the only room in the house with single glazing (conservation area rules) and a heavy rug; it's the coldest room in the house and looses heat pretty quick if we don't close the shutters. Luckily for us, the fireplace is functional and we light a fire almost every evening in the winter. I've been thinking about buying a thinner rug, but it really doesn't bother us that much. Make of this what you will, but personally, I still love UFH and I'd rather live with no rugs than go back to radiators... Good luck with your project! @mckevis - congrats on finishing! The Karndean / Amtico you mention are Vinyl floor tiles/planks so they are much thinner. However the sub floor preparation (Latex/Plyboard) also add further depth over your under floor heating system. If you choose to go for one of these products please check with your retailer that the flooring is compatible with your under floor heating system. Hope this helps.

Hi Sarah, Almost any floor covering can work well with underfloor heating. Each floor covering will provide a different level of thermal conductivity, making it easier or harder for your underfloor heating to meet the desired floor surface temperature. It's a good idea to choose an underfloor heating system that has been designed with your choice of floor covering in mind, as this will provide the most efficient heating for your home, as well as ensuring that sensitive floor coverings are protected. Engineered wood is an excellent choice for pairing with underfloor heating, as it is effective in transferring heat from the underfloor heating tube to the surface of the floor. It can also generally be laid directly over the underfloor heating without the need for an additional, structural floor deck - your underfloor heating supplier will be able to advise if this is the case. We would always recommend that you ask your flooring supplier if there are any special care conditions (such as maximum temperatures) for your flooring. If needed, your underfloor heating supplier should be able to provide a floor temperature sensor which limits the heat output from the floor to protect the floor coverings, whilst still ensuring that the desired room temperature is met. Hi Emily, Wood flooring in the kitchen is perfectly fine. You can opt for a varnished floor that require no special maintenance apart from adequate cleaning, or an oiled floor that do require regular oiling but that is also easier to repair or re-sand. underfloor heating is not a problem either and although wood is an excellent insulator (unlike ceramic tiles) the heat from the underfloor heating will make your wood floor warm and comfortable. However, always remember that with underfloor heating you need to keep en eye on air and floor temperature and air humidity. Too dry (which is often the case with underfloor heating) and gapping between floorboards can appear. Too humid and the floor may "cup". Fell free to get in touch if you need more info. All the best.
