Kitchen surfaces: Does dark or light granite work best?

When creating the perfect look and feel for your space, the kitchen surfaces are important. We have a range of different finishes from princess white to black granite. Which one do you prefer?

Such a practical and boring answer but I'm all for dark polished granite - way easier to clean (and looks lovely in a contemporary kitchen, too!)

Valid points, it's not a boring answer at all. Agreed, black granite looks absolutely stunning in a contemporary kitchen!

I've been looking at changing worktop too. A very useful guy (kitchen fitter) told me that the problem I'd have is that the tiles come just down to level with the top of the worksurface, so there's a risk that the removal of the worktops would either damage the tiles or the replacements won't sit properly with the old tiles. Anyway, I decided to stick with my ugly laminate and then save towards the whole kitchen replacement. If you want to live with the wooden work tops, you can make them look fab by sanding them down a bit, then apply Osmo hard wax - it makes the surface water resistant and gives them a lovely sheen, really feeding the wood. Either way - do keep us posted and take a good look at that tile depth issue! (Solution for anyone doing their kitchen is apparently to put marine ply on top of the cabinets, tile down to the ply level, then put the worktop on top of the ply).

Hello Ben, There are lots of alternatives to wood. How about granite, quartz or conglomerate marble? Conglomerate marble is more durable than standard marble, which is great for kitchens to reduce any possible staining or scratches. Granite and quartz are both very durable, non-porous materials and popular choices for kitchen worktops, too. Not to mention all three materials will last you a life time. If you're looking for a light worktop we'd recommend: quartz QU011 and QU078 and conglomerate marble CG028 and CG025. Good luck!

I have black granite work tops and a huge amount of them and an island - my reason for choosing is that I believe granite is a lot stronger in the dark colours where as marble is stronger in the light colours - I am (hope husband doesn't see this!) a little bit bored of the black work tops - they are classic but a bit dead - next time, if there is ever a next time, I would not play so safe and would go for light work tops with a bit more interest. I would steer clear of work tops unless you are prepared to really look after them and treat them regularly! As for walls - I would go light - and ensure it is a paint that you can wash splattering off! Not a basic emulsion! That way, by going light you can change colour of kitchen accessories at any time to freshen it up and update it. If I was planning a new kitchen now, I would probably go for light tops with up stands and then have a feature surface in a different material - perhaps a rounded wooden block at the end of a unit as a feature. I love my kitchen but I have played it a bit safe, on reflection!!

Hi Emma, We have installed the Cemento spa in several of our projects. Our clients like the suede as it does not need drying/buffing up once its been cleaned. My suggestion would be to borrow the small samples from your kitchen supplier (suede and polish) and use them as testers/coaster deliberate spillages etc - this will give you a better idea of usability and aid you in making the correct decision.
