Hi, I'm two weeks away for starting work in the kitchen. First thing that's happening is opening out the chimney breast to move the range cooker into it. Have chimney specialist doing the work but now questioning whether I should leave the sides as would want to if possible put cabinets in line with the cooker. Or can I leave it and still have something there just maybe shallower. We're doing this ourselves in the planning, and some of the work, so just stumped.

Hi

Thank you so much for that. It's our existing gas cooker (900mm). Hadn't thought of the handles. Seeing all of the pictures of cookers in the chimney and they are so close, but yes will use a gap.

Have specialist chimney people doing the opening and then builder / Kitchen fitter doing the rest (moving gas, plumbing and electrics)

How exciting!! Great news! I can't really see the rest of the room but based on those images I would keep with the contemporary neutrals in keeping with the kitchen. A little greige on most of the walls. Something like Ammonite but it depends on the lighting levels and directions with in the space. I would then create a feature wall the other side of the dining table - probably opting for a mural of some kind rather than a paint colour :) Best of luck

Hi Simon Looking at your floor plan there seems to be a lot of under utilised space and i am guessing from the first floor plan that there will be sky lights down the left hand side of the extension? Have you considered moving most of the kitchen to the left hand side so your counters are under natural day light. You could sacrifice any top units for open shelving to maximise the light/view. Also may sure you have at least 1 unit space of worktop either side of sink and hob. If it is possible, perhaps a bigger utility could be gained by moving the dividing wall between the SRR and the hall??? Alternatively a cheaper option could be to install a wall of floor to ceiling cupboards in the SRR (kinda like a false wall) that you can hide everything away in (you could even include a large airing cupboard) The opposite wall could be a mix of shallow units, open shelving, a desk if needed or maybe library/reading area and lots of greenery? Think of the SRR as becoming a glorified grand hallway – keeping the middle clear will ease the flow and also give you a decent indoor exercise space? Lighting will also be very important in this area – maybe a mix of ‘daylight’ effect bulbs and also mood lighting/lamps for when you want it more cosy. Is the roof glass like shown on the images? If so, before you do your kitchen here, I would try and talk to someone who has done this. I have a client I am currently working with for their layout. They came to use because the previous owners did exactly what you are suggesting and it was unbearable to be in there in the hotter months/days. The owners did the work then sold it because they didn't like it in the end, and the new owners are now paying me to rip it out and put it back in the existing covered part of the house with the dining room in the glass area, with storage and play area. It's definitely worth looking at before you go ahead with something so major and costly. I think as @Jonathan suggested, I would try and open the space up further, even if it means waiting a little longer for it :) ...best to get it right the first time. Best, Gina

What kind of cooker top will you be using ? If gas then be careful if you have any combustible materials ( t&g etc) too close to the sides of the cooker. It's always useful to have a min of 150mm space between edge of cooker and a side wall /mantel etc so you have room for pan handles etc !
It's advisable to get any 'DIY' kitchen plans safety checked by a credible professional before you order anything !

Hello Springes,

It sounds like an exciting time for you at the moment.. I personally love the idea of a range within a chimney breast and instantly your kitchen will be transformed as the orientation and focus will be re-instated....

You could design your kitchen with the elements you intend to include and I rather like the idea of having some things to hand, so room for this would be a gr8 idea...See image..

My suggestion is this.. Hire the best kitchen fitter to fit and install, they will not only advise you re regulations etc if this happens to be an issue but the fitting is crucial in giving a lasting, professional and fabulous finish..

Whatever kitchen you choose at whatever budget you have, it will be fitted beautifully and this can make all the difference in the world.. : ))

Thank you A J. This picture is one of my likes also. And makes sense leaving the gap either side. The chimney breast is large at about 6 1/2 ft.

We're not brave enough to try and fit ourselves so will be a fitter. Completely get what you say that a great fitter and fitting makes the most difference.
A little way off yet as not ordered new units but getting the hard and dirty work done beforehand.

Looking forward to the changes.

Yes it's quite a size your chimney breast, and so I thought something that makes good use of the space you have. The pic is good but I am not actually keen on the drawers unless they're really large for pans for example.

Equally I think a run of cupboards can look sleeker and give a better flow but all depends on what you need and how you use the space... I personally don't find a need for drawers at all as you can situate a drawer within a cupboard.. They are as much an aesthetic consideration as they are a functional one..

I suppose it depends what else is going in the kitchen as I also love an old dresser or a set of shelves for all the gorgeous crockery.. I liked your image too with the portrait and the lettering.. but the tiles from the below image you posted. I also really like the idea of glass metro tiles. Which I think is an interesting difference..

Of course though you can also lay them out like this. Anyone who reads my suggestions a lot or knows me, knows I talk a lot about texture and layering, with accessories and other small aspects of design or product.. This kind of detail can take a kitchen from clinical to classy and give you as you have posted with your images something really quite unique and lovely...

Absolutely a good idea to get the range in situ, and then you can see what the room will look like, which will help you decide what you want to put and where.. Do share the next steps.. : ))

If they are starting in less than two weeks - I'm assuming you have a plan sorted already ?

As the various trades, like electrician for example, will need to know where to put fused spurs and sockets and lighting etc to get that signed off as safe to part P ...

And you will need to have the right sized cabinets ordered /delivered etc .

You will need a Gas Safe registered tradesperson to sign off the gas changes too.

These things are usually planned in advance ! Rather than made up as you go along !

Yes, chimney work starts tomorrow and the moving of gas, water, waste and points start the week after. Only thing not disturbing is the ceiling lighting, as so much hassle so going to use funky flex lighting over the dining and sink areas, and also LED in the alcove areas.
Two separate companies. Once everything has been moved, I'm going to lay parquet flooring, and then have decorated.

We're placing back the old until the new comes, but have gone through design. I've bought a luxury item of a Fisher & Paykel double dish draw, so very excited, and going for a hot tap and waste disposal unit as well.

Going with the British Standard Carpentry firm. Sister and much cheaper firm of Plain English.

Hello Springes,

As with most projects there are phases and so I'm pretty sure you mentioned you have the relevant people coming as and when you need them, which you did for a phased project as a kitchen is.

The first thing to do is make sure you're happy with the first phase which is as you said dealing with the chimney and the range.

Then you can move on to the next phase which is what and where. If you have been living in the space you may well already be informed as to how you move round the space and therefore where you wish to situate certain elements of the kitchen.

Nothing is ever done at once or as you go along... so take the time you need. It's highly advisable to see the (bare) bones of the space in order to visualise spatially where things will go. Also sometimes in a project there can be complications, therefore the need to be able to deal with a change or another way to achieve a result means that sometimes things have to be dealt with as you go along. So having trades who are able to view a problem from many angles or think outside the box is beneficial..

One thing I'd suggest is to have the flooring laid before cabinets as I prefer to have the cabinets laid onto it. For a perfect finish. People do differ on this and it can also be as a result of budget.. but..

It sounds like it's going to be lovely and that you have it all in hand! British standard is a gr8 way to get a Plain English Kitchen.. All be it you have to send all the measurements but your fitter will make sure these are perfect. If you can lay the Parquet before the fitter fits the cabinets that would be excellent.. Look forward to seeing it....

It maybe too late as the timing maybe too short but I would recommend taking your plan into a local kitchen shop and discussing it with a designer, most of us would at least have a glance at it for no charge.

As the above mentioned if the kitchen is not having a skirting its better to have the floor down first as similar to our kitchens its a nightmare to try and cut would around all the legs and it will never look good.

Works delayed so will start on Wednesday. I will take your advice as only queries is the space around the chimney breast.

The floor will most definitely be done wall to wall. It makes laying parquet so much easier especially with the expansion gap. I'm laying this myself and have learned that cutting hardwood (teak) isn't the easiest of tasks especially for a circular saw novice (used a Worx mini saw)
