How do you decided to do a flat panel drawer or a 5 piece drawer?

I'm planning a clean classic white shaker style kitchen (island, stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors) and notice that often the drawer styles are a combination of flat panel or 5 peice front. How do you decide where to use the flat panel? Thank you!

A flat panel is used when the drawer face is too small to allow for the stiles & rails and a panel that is cosmetically acceptable. Say you have a 5" tall drawer front and all the stiles and rail pieces are 2 1/2". Do the math, and the 2 pieces ( top and bottom rails ) will touch. No room for a panel. Its going to depend on the drawer count you have on all your lower, drawer, base cabinets. More drawers per base cabinet, equals, smaller drawer fronts

I love my Shaker cabinets in natural cherry--refused to get the stainless apl. b/c hate the messy look, yes to the hardwood floors--we have oak.

I love the colour of the furniture, but I would definitely find some new handles for them. Maybe something in lilac? Like a cut glass, or something ceramic and pretty. Look at Laura Ashley for inspiration but you can find cheaper versions, and usually just as well made, elsewhere. Match the wardrobe to the chest of drawers more and make them look even more refined. Also maybe put something above the wardrobe, like a trunk or something fitting to the room, to fill the space. Love how this looks already though, not much more and it'll be perfect.

We rent unfurnished, so always have our own furniture around us. I don't go in TOO much for the soft furnishings (rugs, cushions, curtains, throws), as they are cluttersome and really interefere with a low-maintenance life. Moreover, sadly, my posters, paintings and photographs have had to stay in storage for about five years, due to increasing fussiness by landlords/ -ladies about holes in the walls. HOWEVER, it is crucial to have ENOUGH of your own things around you, so that the web of YOUR things covers over a space which is, essentially, not yours. Minimalism has definite limits. Our last place had revolting dull mustard yellow walls, which definitely needed covering! Bookcases (with books!), a folding screen/ room divider, tension rods to create hanging rails, and one big rug (for the sitting room) come with us everywhere, like the interior of some sort of nomad's yurt! Seasonal and fresh decorations are another way to decorate a temporary home, and they leave only biodegradable waste, rather than broken MDF or shattered plastic! Leaf-skeletons on a string and rosehip-studded twigs (snap off the thorns!) for autumn (Fall). Holly, ivy and dried wildflowers for winter. Fresh wildflowers for spring and summer. Herbs in the kitchen.

I have the same set of drawers sitting behind me, and I also got a desk in the same range which has split into two lovely bedside chests of drawers. Mine is walnut with black trim. It looks like yours is oak. The drawer fronts would have originally been wood so it might be worth stripping them. Try sanding a patch of the side and dampening it slightly to get an idea of how it will look with the horrible old varnish stripped off and waxed. I found the old varnish came off really easily with sandpaper. My chest of drawers is finished with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil on the drawers and I painted the whole of the carcass black gloss as it needed some filling. I can highly recommend the Hard Wax Oil finish if you can find a small tin. You can paint any colour but I would recommend that you stay with more masculine colours rather than pastels as these are very masculine styled pieces. So, grey blues perhaps rather than baby blue. My own choice might be Swedish Blue from Craig & Rose, with perhaps a very pale grey for the drawers if they couldn't be brought back to the wood. You can use emulsion paints as long as you overcoat that with wax or varnish so the finish will last.

I would go with sanding with an orbital sander to start, with nothing coarser than 120or 150 grit, finish with a fine grit on a belt sander following the grain. Orbital sanders leave circular scratches which are visible at some angles. As an alternative you can finish by raising the grain with an abrasive filament wheel (http://www.silverlinetools.com/en-GB/Products/Power%20Tool%20Accessories/Filament%20Brushes/218250) once again folowing the grain, finish with a varnish of your choice, Danish oil, Tung oil or a good beeswax finish. If you want to change the colour of the wood (darker) then use a wood dye, everythng called a stain nowadays is some type of varnish with usually a finely powdered colour in it, quicker but limited to brilliant, satin or matt, whereas with a dye you can apply the finish of your choice. http://www.jpennyltd.co.uk/shopping/start.php?browse=1&cat=25 Be sure to mask and cover the painting below that you have already done. If you have dents in a wood surface as opposed to scratches it is often possible to bring them out with one or two goes over with a steam iron with a piece of rag between. Yarbro is correct.. We have to skinny down the horizontals to get a center panel and sometimes the look isn't worth the additional cost (flat drawer fronts are cheaper to do)

We opted to do flat panel drawers. Felt is was a less fussy look plus way easier to clean. Often we are in the drawers more frequently and finger prints and drips occur more. Easy to wipe them off.
