Anyone know where to get 'non-standard' size kitchen handles?

We've just moved house and want to replace the kitchen cupboard handles as a quick win. The only problem is that the existing handles are a non-standard size at 120mm.

We've searched high & low but can't find ANY handles in this size & have tried to customise some IKEA ones without success. We've had a quote to get some bespoke ones made but it's in the hundreds of pounds.

Does anyone know of somewhere that might do this size? We're just looking for a very simple, modern handle.

I would recommend looking at Herbert Direct (www.herbertdirect.co.uk)

They'll have some contemporary handles at your desired 120mm length.

I found lots ( is the 120mm your hole centres? as that's the measurement you go by )

😱 indeed, Victoria. That's how I feel but at the same time, the middle horizontal is a bit high for me. Sigh. Maybe I'll hunt out some neighbours with the original doors and try a few out! Thanks for the link, Joanna. The problem is I've fallen in love with some door knobs, they are an unusual finish and the manufacturer makes matching latches but they only do 60mm and 100mm to the backset. The short one feels a bit tight. The long one is too long, esp if I pair them with thumb turns on the bathroom and toilet doors. I feel so privileged to even have this dilemma but if you are going to spend a lot of money, you want it to be perfect! I shall ponder.

Beyond your desired look and feel, you need to have a list of appliances that need to be included in the layout. Most technical kitchen design is about how to fit all the appliances in. Cabinets tend to fit into place around them. I've noticed also that you want folding sliding doors (FSDs). They are very fashionable at the moment but come with certain issues you should be aware of. Firstly, they come with a lot of moving parts. Over time, new walls and door openings tend to settle and can cause issues with the ease of opening. When open, FSD panels take a up a surprising amount of space. You need to include that space in your plan. Of course, they can open to the outside but that could impede the flow of people outside. Consider large sliding doors or stacking sliding doors instead. If you're set of FSDs try to go with standard sizes as they tend to be less expensive than custom sizes. That applies to any doors/windows.

Hi Darren, having seen the photo's of the neighbours, no you may not have problems with planning. However, I don't see how this will solve your initial directive. You wanted a social space connected with the lounge. Just making the kitchen bigger I don't think solves this. I also do not think that the majority of people these days just want a big kitchen, they, like you want more open plan / broken plan living, thus putting the extension at the rear makes the most sense. I think you're going round in circles and making this a lot harder than it needs to be. There's enough room at the back for an extension, which gives you great space and lets you keep the garage. Win, win.................and more saleable in the future with more probably adds the most value to the house. Check with an estate agent.

Hi Julian H, Wow, many thanks for your amazing inspiration! I love the idea of bifold doors, although that would take me way over my budget....but it would be lovely - and has got me thinking...! Unfortunately I don't want to lose the single door as that is the door to a small bathroom which is difficult to access from elsewhere and would then be access from a carpeted floor rather than a tiled floor, which from a muddy garden is a no. …. But with the bi fold doors, I would then be ok with blocking up my side window as per Jonathan's initial comment. Yes, moving the sink and water supply would be a pain/pricey, but it could be worthwhile seeing as everything is coming out - this is the one time opportunity. Let me have a think! Many thanks for this idea. I am trying to avoid having an extension, but maybe bi-folds could get round this and still provide a fabulous view (plus I think my boyfriend's parents are thinking of getting their bi-folds updated!!!). Thanks both. Yes the 120mm is the centres - so the hole measurement. It's not standard so even if the handles measure 120mm the centres are usually smaller....

128mm is a common size and most modern handles would cover your holes at 120mm. I'd fill the holes (if necessary) to get a better fixing and use the 128mm options.
