A question on the beams

Hi. Are those beams wrapped in wood? If so what did you use? We are planning on wrapping our living room beam and are wondering about how to handle the seams. Thank you for your help in advance.

If I recall correctly, the beams are wrapped in white oak. Oak can have fairly loose and swirly grain patterns which makes it more difficult to get a seamless look. In our case it was very difficult to find wide planks from the same milling (tree).
At install you will want to glue the backside and use clamps to hold it together -- it is best to splice the pieces with a biscuit joiner. Here is a photo during the install :

Thanks! I love the picture. We ended up wrapping ours in cedar. Mostly because we liked the look and it was cost effective. We ended up doing some hand painting of stain to hide areas where dark grain hit light grain...and it actually worked pretty well. The beams are pretty high up.I love this house. It looks like you did an amazing job.

I don't think the step is bad thing, it sounds like the flooring inside and the paving outside will end up the same level. However, it would sound like the door was measured incorrectly. ( If everything was fully explained to the operative that came round and did the measuring ) If that is the case, tell the company that you will accept the door, but that you want a discount because it's not what you wanted. You can only try!

Well as you can imagine, work stopped a few weeks ago. I've managed to get some supplies delivered so I'm doing the DIY bits. I'm currently boarding out the dining room ceiling to slightly lower it and to install downlights. The wiring and boarding should be done well before my builder us allowed back. Then I have to source the kitchen all over again!

Aw Minnie. If you mean my room is lovely, I am touched. There is a lot wrong with it and the tiles are the biggest mistake I think. Anyway, I have tried to see red and neither me nor my colour blind hubby can sett it tbh. The paint was colour matched to the background of the wallpaper and is used throughout the flat. It definitely shows as a lilac tinge in some rooms, so maybe this is the the purple colour some people are seeing too. This cushion I have stolen from my bedroom works well with the room, I have 2 of these. The cushions on the sofa are definitely not right for sure. Your second pic is just gorgeous. It looks dark navy in tone to me. I am viewing on my laptop. The cushion is stunning. Also the comment and suggestion of Sonia's (which follows yours), looks worth a look. This does definitely have a green, blue, grey tone pic looks stunning. I really do think it does tie all the colours together. Something I did not think would happen in my lifetime. I am thrilled to see just what others are noticing and all are taken on board and considered. To think that people have taken the time to even bother to get in touch is heartwarming. Position of roof lantern(s) and french vs sliding doors

Hello, We are about to finalise our potential single-storey extension of a 1930s semi-detached build and would like some advise. Question 1 We are creating a family room with adjoining kitchen, that opens up onto a patio area and garden. The family room is 5.8m deep, and will be approx 5.7m wide. Decisions that we are contemplating: 1. would like to have a single large roof lantern in the middle, say3.5m x 3.5m (orange dotted line in floor plan). However to have this size, I will need more structural beams (ie extra expense) 2. architect has suggested 2x 2.5x1.2m roof lanterns that run parallel in the room (blue/green dotted lines in floor plan)- this means will only need 1 structural beam in the middle, and thus more cost effective. NB. In addition to the roof lantern(s) in the living room, we will have either a flat or roof lantern in the kitchen which will be 3x1m Whilst we can to keep the costs reasonable, if it only costs a little bit more but has more light (given the dining room area will not have direct light) would prefer the first option - welcome any thoughts. Question 2 For the doors leading to the patio, I would like to have 2 sets of double french doors with sidelights. Given it is a 5.7m wide space, there is not enough space for 2x a pair double french doors with 2 sidelights. Option 1: I was thinking of having 2 pair of double french doors with a single sidelight (1 has left side light, and 1 has a right side light) 3 panel french door attached, with a slim brick wall in between. so it would be: <-1m wall space-> <-1 set of double french doors with left sidelight-> <-1 set of double french doors with right sidelight-> <-1m wall space->. The french doors would be in line with the roof lantern option 2 above. (cant find an exact picture, however have double french doors next to each other in the picture attached) Alternatively i i leave 1m wall on each side, leaving about 3.7m of door space, I was thinking of: Option 2. a single set of double french doors with sidelights in the middle of the wall space, and possibly tall windows along until the end of each side? Option 3. sliding door with minimal profile? Would really appreciate any advise.

Thanks very much -- the architect is excellent. I love the house too and it was one of my favorite builds -- the kind I would like to live in myself!
Cedar is a great option for beams too - the grains are pretty --- and of course it smells wonderful. I used cedar more than any other material when I used to build homes in British Columbia.
